ACT Policing has arrested a 16-year-old youth after a vehicle pursuit early this morning (Saturday, 4 February).
Around 1.05am, members from Tuggeranong Police Station were conducting a mobile patrol in Kambah when they saw a dark coloured Hyundai sedan travelling on Jenke Street.
After seeing the police vehicle, the driver immediately accelerated away. Police activated emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to pull the car over and a pursuit commenced. The car travelled through the intersection of Boddington and Marconi Crescent at a speed of 154km/hr in an 80km/hr zone.
As the car approached the Hindmarsh Drive intersection, the driver lost control before colliding with a road sign. The driver attempted to continue to drive however the vehicle was badly damaged and could not be moved. The passenger ran from the vehicle but was apprehended a short distance away.
The driver and passenger were uninjured but were taken by ACT Ambulance to the Canberra Hospital for observation.
The 16-year-old unaccompanied learner driver was released from police custody into his mother’s care. He will face the ACT Children’s Court at a later date charged with furious/reckless/dangerous driving, unaccompanied learner and failing to stop for police.
