Thredbo Alpine Resort has swept the prize pool in recent weeks having been crowned ‘Australia’s Best Ski Resort’ for the eighth consecutive year in the prestigious World Ski Awards, also amassing several other national and international awards.
Also announced the ‘Best Australian Ski Resort For Families’ at the Out & About with Kids annual Readers’ Choice Awards for the seventh year in a row, Thredbo has also won ‘Australia’s Best Ski Resort’ at the Snowsports Industries Of Australia Awards for the third consecutive year and in one for conservationists, was awarded the Climate Change Mitigation & Adaptation Award at the 2024 Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Tidy Towns Sustainability Awards.
The World Ski Awards is the only international initiative to recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in ski tourism on a global scale.
According to Thredbo general manager Stuart Diver, the win was a direct result of Thredbo’s commitment to delivering a world-class customer experience through a diverse range of on-mountain experiences alongside the country’s best skiing and snowboarding.
In 2024, the resort introduced the Southern Hemisphere’s first Alpine Coaster – which allows thrillseekers to travel along a mix of uphill and downhill tracks featuring a tunnel, bridges and circles that traverse 1.5 kilometres of mountainside – now open 365 days a year.
In a season with multiple snowfalls and a consistent run of ideal snowmaking, Mr Diver said seasonal conditions allowed Thredbo to build a strong base and continually open more terrain.
He said another new feature for terrain park enthusiasts this winter saw Thredbo local and resort ambassador Olympian Scotty James unveil a new 13ft Mini Pipe, which he donated, in the resort’s Cruiser area.
This came ahead of the announcement that Australia’s first-ever 22ft winter halfpipe would also be part of the resort offering, as well as a 65ft jump to support athlete development ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Last winter, according to Mr Diver, this jump attracted a hugely elite rider line-up including Mark McMorris, Anna Gasser, Clemens Millauer and the national teams from Australia, the United States, Canada, Austria, Japan and China.
He said he was thrilled with the best ski resort award, which topped a big year in development.
“Thredbo makes significant yearly developments to ensure every winter is better than the last and 2024 was no different,” he said.
This included the purchase of a new all-weather snowmaking unit, the first of its kind in NSW.
The Demac Lenko SnowPRO 260 is designed to produce up to 260 cubic metres of snow per day in temperatures up to 20 degrees Celsius which, according to Mr Diver, combined with traditional snowmaking, will have a major positive impact on Thredbo’s ability to ensure great snow coverage in their beginner area on Friday Flat.
While Thredbo was awarded the Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Award at the 2024 Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Tidy Towns Sustainability Awards, it was also lauded for its Litter Prevention, Resource Recovery program.
As the first Australian snow resort to hold Gold EarthCheck Sustainable Destination Certification for four years running, Mr Diver said this further recognition of their environmental initiatives was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team in promoting sustainable practices and protecting the unique alpine environment for future generations.
The resort was also winner of the Overall Tidy Towns Award in the population category of less than 1500 people.
“I am so proud of the Thredbo team for consistently delivering a premium experience each season despite the challenges faced this winter,” he said.
“Our success in 2024 is a direct result of the hard work and commitment of not only our team, but also the unwavering community support and the guests who choose Thredbo as their winter destination year after year,” said Mr Diver.
