A Hard Rain’s a Fallin’ in The Valley

By paperboy - 13 April 2009 20

I’d love to hear from those living down south about the rain on Saturday night.

The Weather Bureau says while the airport had 6mm (and here in the North I had around 8mm), Tuggeranong had 29mm.

And better still, or perhaps worse still if the downpipes were blocked, Tuggeranong had 19.8mm in just 30 minutes between 6 and 6.30pm.

Now that’s raining!

According to Elders Weather the April average is 46.7mm.

Tuggeranong’s averge is 23mm (over 5 days) & it has had 70mm (over 3 days) so far. It rained until after 3am in Kambah & we had around 40ishmm (I’m going by an old dog dish that is in the backyard).

Our gauge overflows at 20mm – so we got more than that. I wonder if there is a way to measure the overflow?

Get a bigger rain gauge, haha. Mind, ours overflows at 40mm. But I figure more than that is plenty for the garden anyway.

Our sad grass is looking much better already too.

We had 34 mm in Harcourt Hill last night. I suppose Canberra has pretty much exceeded the April average by now.
Did I hear Mark Carmody say before 7.30pm on ABC last night that the light rain around north of Canberra on the radar was about all we would get, nothing significant in sight for the night. Presume Mark would be repeating what a duty BoM person had told him.

We’ve had good soaking rain falling for the last hour or so in the inner north.

We also had some rain earlier over the Easter break, but only about 7mm or so in our gauge, before tonight.

A friend from Banks returned home today to find 42mm in his gauge.

Just over 20mm in North Kambah East. I had also loosened up some dirt just before the pelting rain came & the dirt stayed there.

The good thing was that the car had its first wash since mid January & the car needed it as dirt was building up in the car logo.

A lovely 28mm in the rain gauge here in Kambah.

Yes it rained some and then some, I’ve taken up the top soil on a stretch of garden, thinking of having a slab there or pavers but since Saturday the whole thing is now just one enormous mud bath 🙂

We had 20mm (Weston Ck). There was an initial downpour just before dark, a bit of a lull then persistent rain over about two hours. Our downpipes are clear but we have overflows that run in really heavy rain, and the only time I heard them was towards the end of the second lot of rain.

I saw the data on the Tuggeranong observations too and thought OMG.

It was beautiful, but uneventful. And not particularly useful; the tank’s full, but I still had to use it to water yesterday as the ground was dry as a bone by 9am.
