Canberra’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are preparing for the transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), with two events to share information about how it will work.

Minister for Disability Joy Burch said it was important to engage the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community with the NDIS, which begins in the ACT on 1 July.

“We are holding two special events here in the ACT in partnership with Gugan Gulwan and Carers ACT specifically for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to come together and have a chat about the NDIS,” Ms Burch said.

“Each event will feature a community barbecue, music and a range of activities for the kids. The organisers will also provide transport for those who need it. If you have a disability, or you care for someone who does, this is a great opportunity to catch up with friends and hear about how the NDIS might be able to help you.”

The first event is at the Tuggeranong Child and Family Centre today (24 June), and the second is at the West Belconnen Child and Family Centre on 3 July.

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs Shane Rattenbury said the

NDIS was an important reform to improve health comes for people with disabilities.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are more likely to experience disability than non-Indigenous people. Closing the gap when it comes to health outcomes is absolutely essential and requires a whole-of-government approach,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“As we transition to the NDIS the ACT Government will ensure it continues to work with the ACT’s Indigenous population, the Elected Body and organisations to ensure the NDIS delivers for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

“The NDIS is for everyone, and these events will begin a conversation to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are properly informed about the transition and how the NDIS will support them and their families.”
