Allhomes Share listings now cost $21

I have noticed that allhomes.com.au has been going through multiple changes over the past 12 months. Some things good, some things I’m not sure about.

The latest update I have stumbled across is the $21 for allhomes share ads. This meaning if I have a spare room I want to rent out I now have to pay $21 to put the ad onto the internet. I do see there are more features (photos and maps) but I want to know what other people think of this charge.

Not to jump the gun I have done some research – it is cheaper then realestate.com.au and domain.com.au and the listing does stay for longer but can I justify paying the money?

I think the bottom line with this whole post is that Allhomes is a business.

Would you really like to own your own business and have punters always wanting your services for free? I think not Mon Ami. $21 is $21 yeah?

Facebook is becoming a more and more useful tool, something i might do while screening people for the house is ask if they have a facebook that i can look at,

Thats a really sucky use for FB man! That’s on par with an ex-flat mate who wanted to take photos of all potentials to refer back to. If I were them, I’d be saying “f**k off”. That kind of vetting can turn very cool, easy going people, in to quite irrational cranky folk IMO.

You also mind end up with just a boring waif who sits around the house ALL day and cruises FB. I’m sure we’d be hearing your complaints about that one too?

If you don’t mind sharing with ANU students:

cragslist (new to Canberra and Australia):

I have no troubles sharing with students, I think the 2 whom are moving out were both affiliated with ANU in some way.
Thanks for the extra sites, i’ll give them a look.

Jones, is that you?

Yes it is me, But Probably Not the Jones you were after, Im not familar with a granny. I also dont go by the name Jones that often.

Facebook is becoming a more and more useful tool, something i might do while screening people for the house is ask if they have a facebook that i can look at, You can tell alot from peoples pictures they post, Their status changes, Friends, Applications they install and hey if they’ve listed anything interesting in their Info. Damn you facebook being so useful.

I think you can justify it, but I find it annoying too. I think $21 is a bit high.

I think $21 is very good value! Consider that it would cost over $45 for a tiny bit of plain writing in the Canberra Times on a Saturday. On AH, you get to write a lengthy description, post photo’s, keep track of how many hits you’ve had etc etc.

I’m one of the biggest cheap-skates around, but I’m surprised that people are moaning about $21 for this service.

I was quoted over $500 for a structural engineer to tell me if a few broken bricks in the sub-floor of my house were of concern. Needless to say I didn’t take out their service.

The trouble with Craigslist is they’ve done nothing to build momentum in the Australian market and a lot of the listings are by international criminal syndicates. (less so for share housing)

A notice on RiotACT is free, runs saturdays, notices@the-riotact.com

But facebook seems to be where it’s at. Just put in your status that you’re looking.

Oops! and to areaman too.

we really need for Craig’s List to take off on Australia. It’s perfect for share houses/rooms to rent. And classifieds. I have found many places to live in the US on Craig’s List, and flogged my Walmart bike on it, too. And it’s FREE. And everyone reads it.

Thanks for the heads-up, ant. I’d only heard it referred to on US shows and thought it was a US thing only. Will check it out.

Not really, but I will be. Thanks for asking, peterh.

Do what you need to do, Sleaz. I am ashamed, but not by my conduct with you. Say what you want. I can hardly feel worse than I do already, and I do actually care about you. So if it makes you feel better, go ahead and trash me. I’ve obviously upset you. I would rather you’d talked to me about it, but I am still sorry that you’re upset. You can talk to me any time if you want.

granny, you ok?

re the allhomes ownership issue, didn’t independent property group get it as a part of their takeover of blackshaws?

Growling Ferret8:34 am 22 Oct 08

$21 is a lot less than a classified ad in Saturdays CanTimes…

Perfect opportunity for someone to set up a ‘free’ housemate website and live off the ads. It’s been done in other countries, why not here?

You’d just better be glad I don’t have the damn gerbil, or I can tell you where I’d stick it!!

Uh oh are you mad at me? Is it because of the milo? Hahahahahaha

No doubt JB will put together a riot act drink along one day in summer…

hint hint wink wink thingy

Ok, whatever.

Hey hey drink driving is the new black… don’t ya know?

You can be morally against something without it having done something to you. For instance I’m morally against beastiality…

You know for instance.

Well, I was surprised!

*chuckle*

It’s good to know that some things never change in this world. Why are you morally against emoticons? What has an emoticon ever done to you for that matter?

Drinks – I don’t mind but I’m taking a taxi ….

: P

Hahahaha

Granni you of all should know that a leopard never changes spots…

When’s drinks next? No more sims challenge excuses to down pints, frowny face forwny face (I’m morally against emoticons remember)

I thought about trivia but it clashed with the gym oh and uni to if I ever go to another lecture.

I thought you were changing your name ….

*chuckle*

I’ve just traumatised poor Jones the newbie. They might never be back!

Good thing we found our 4trh housemate recently then and the listing was free. THey might have to start changing their obnoxious ads to “all homes we use to have 99% of the market but instead of leveraging ad revenue decided to slug our users who now go through other means. 98……97…….96……95……90…….80…….65

Maybe this is an opportunity for the Canberra Times to regather some customers by offering a free service similar to $!00 and under Tuesday. Free share rental ads on thursday, can’t hurt their readership and will reduce the average ago of their demographic for sure.

$21 for most people in share accommodation I’m sure is another cost they can do without. $21 feeds me for 2-3 days. Or as thumper mentioned 4 pints…pints people

(The whois confirms it is owned by Andrea Blackshaw)

They subscribe to the drug dealer business model.

1. Get everyone hooked by offering free drugs. (Free Listings)
2. Create a dependency among your user-base. (99% of home-buyers use allhomes!)
3. Start charging for your drugs. (Charge for listings)
4. Start charging MORE for your drugs because you’re a greedy drug dealer. (charge more for listings!)

Eventually someone will come and put a cap in them but for the time being you’ll have to put up with their prices 🙂

Listing on http://accom.anu.edu.au/UAS/187.html is still free!

I thought it was Peter Blackshaw too.

Matt Sheppard6:36 pm 21 Oct 08

Who owns allhomes? Anyone know?

I heard it was one of the agents…I want to say Peter Blackshaw, but I can’t immediately find anything to confirm that.

People still pay for classified ads? Shame about not embracing Craigslist.

Well then, you’ve done the research, but failed to reach the only valid conclusion. Well done!

That’s a bit unfair. My take on the question was that it was sounding out if allhomes would provide “bang for the buck” rather than simply a longer time on the site.

Ka-ching! You may have sneakily saved yourself $21 Overheard!

I think you can justify it, but I find it annoying too. I think $21 is a bit high. I don’t care much right now (i.e. I’d probably pay it), but back when I was a povo student I would have found it pricey. $21 would have been 2/3 or more of my weekly food bill.

I’m not sure I’d want to live with a RiotACT reader.

Damn! I was just about to say I’ll be shortly back on allhomes share pages again trawling for some inner north abode looking for respectful, chilled individuals and a bit of a realistic attitude towards energy consumption who can live with the fact that their roomy will be gone for 35-45-60% of the time!

But maybe I won’t mention that here…

I had to pay $25 for lobster down at Muirs today, because the weather has forced the little buggers away from the normal potting areas, however the scallops were cheaper.

And you’ll cast a wider net than putting up a notice at the Student Union.
I’m pretty sure allhomes wasn’t started up as a charity service. They used the free ads to achieve the critical mass needed to move to a fee-for-service model. Good on them for managing to achieve it.

Perhaps it’s also an opportunity for the-riotact to offer a similar service for, say, $15?

Petal, I’ll hold your hand and show you where to buy a nice cup of tea

$21 isn’t much really, it’s less than a day’s rent.

This one time on RiotACT… there was a story about someone being overcharged $5 for a pizza.

Totally justified charge for a (commercial) service.

*corrected*

this is what happens when allhomes is acquired part and parcel by a real estate company. you know they need to make money, but in a downturn, wouldn’t they aim a bit lower for a fee for service?

Jonathon Reynolds4:55 pm 21 Oct 08

This on time on RiotACT… there was a story about someone being overcharged $5 for a pizza.

Totally justified charge for a (commercial) service.

Jones, is that you?

Um … yes, if you want the service.

Allhomes is a business like any other, and a very successful one too.

If you don’t think it’s worth paying the $21 then I hope you’ll enjoy subsidising the rental amount until you can fill the vacancy by some other means.

Personally I think it would be cheap at twice the price.

As someone who in the very near future is going to be posting something on allhomes this is abit of a bother, I didn’t expect a fee and am hoping their payment methods are easy enough to use.

What do they accept?
Paypal?
Credit?
Bank Deposit?

I spose the Alternitive to not paying the money is to miss out on potential housemates, which could wind up costing you extra in rent and such.
