ALP’s media release redux

By Gungahlin Al - 4 September 2008 7

As 30+ ACT Government media releases spewed into the Inbox yesterday and the day before, it seemed the ALP’s was really ramping up the campaign – perhaps in an attempt to match the taxpayer-funded TV and print campaigns they are undertaking at present to inform us of their brilliance on office.

There was an air of familiarity about many of the releases – that other most-cherished campaigning tactic of re-releasing initiatives seemed to be getting a serious look in.

But on closer inspection, many of the releases were actually dated in March. Back in March, the ACT Government’s media release email system seemed to go on strike, and nothing came out for a couple of weeks. Well it has all caught up now! All those missing releases dumped on us in one bunch to rival the Budget Media Release assault.

Had they been electronically circling in cyberspace for months (that’d be a lot of laps)? Last night came the explanation:

    “Dear subscriber
A problem with a former website hosting service provider’s equipment caused old government media releases to be re-issued over the past few days.
We have asked the former supplier to correct the problem immediately.
The ACT Government apologises for any inconvenience caused.”

What’s Your opinion?

It hasnt been reliable for at least a year. Its easier to check it manually than rely on them being automatically sent to you.

Sort of a metaphor for the local government in toto.

The ACT Government’s Media Release woes continue…
Before it was “the previous website hosting contractor”.

But their current system seemed to go on a holiday too recently.
It’s making up for it now though – 35 media releases and counting so far today, some as far back as 1 September.

I’ve heard of rehashing old announcements, but this is getting ridiculous.

I have no idea about the climate change leaflet, but I imagine the Canberra Plan ads are off the box during the caretaker period.

ActewAGL is a commercial joint venture half owned by the government-owned ACTEW Corp, and half owned by public company AGL. It’s ludicrous to suggest that AGL would let the its JV partner spend AGLs money on an advertising campaign for the Government. To do so would be a serious derilection of AGLs duties to its shareholders. Clearly the AGL-appointed members of ActewAGLs board consider the advertising to be in the commercial interest of ActewAGL.

A problem with a former website hosting service provider’s equipment caused old government media releases to be re-issued over the past few days.
We have asked the former supplier to correct the problem immediately.

I wonder what other information and data the former supplier still has tucked away…?

So the glossy Climate Change leaflet I received Monday is ALP funded?
The Canberra Plan TV ads likewise?
The ACTEWAGL TV ads?
I’m sure others will add to the list.

Al, the current advertising campaigns are not taxpayer-funded, as we’re in the caretaker period.
