If you’ve ever faced a plumbing disaster that needs to be fixed urgently before it causes costly damage, you’ll understand the value of a professional emergency plumber.

Plumbing emergencies, such as overflowing toilets, blocked pipes, or hot water issues, can strike at any time and when it’s least convenient so you’ll want to act quickly. While not all plumbing firms are available for emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, those that are should be able to solve your problem and remove your stress.

In this article, we’ll outline the qualities to consider when choosing an emergency plumber, and share where to find the best in Canberra.

What makes a great emergency plumber?

Even though fixing your plumbing emergency quickly is a priority, you’ll not want to make hasty decisions about which plumber to use. The first one you find online might not be the best plumber for you.

It can be helpful to keep the following in mind when choosing an emergency plumber.

  • Responsive and reliable. You’ll want an emergency plumber who can get to you quick sharp and when they say they will. Emergency plumbers can be super busy so if the one you call isn’t available asap, try another.
  • Appropriate licenses and insurances. In the ACT, all plumbers must be licensed and meet eligibility requirements (such as having completed a relevant qualification). Double check that your emergency plumber is licensed and has public and products liability insurance.
  • Highly experienced. Experienced plumbers have seen it all and are more likely to get your plumbing problem under control much faster than someone just starting out. Check for a proven track record of success.
  • Transparent pricing. Emergency tradespeople in any industry can charge more for emergency services, including plumbers. Your plumber should be upfront about how much things will cost. Quotes and invoices should be transparent, with no unexpected fees or charges.
  • Guaranteed work. Make sure your emergency plumber guarantees their work and will return to fix additional issues related to their repair, should these occur.

Important essentials to check before engaging a plumber

Master Plumbers ACT recommends you conduct these checks before engaging a plumber. They’re easy and only take five minutes. They’ll ensure you don’t engage a dodgy plumber.

  1. Check that the plumber has a registered business by checking they’re registered through the Australian Business Registration website.
  2. Check that the plumber is registered on the Access Canberra List of Licensed Plumbers. If you can’t find their name, they’re probably not licensed.
  3. Check the plumber’s website and advertising. Make sure their ABN and license number are posted and check if they have Public Liability Insurance. Also check if they hold a membership in a reputable industry association such as Master Plumbers ACT. If they don’t have a website or don’t have this information on their site, it’s likely best to move on.
  4. Ask the plumber you choose to bring proof of their Public Liability Insurance when they arrive on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does emergency plumbing cost?

Each company has its own fee structure. Some charge a call-out fee, but some don’t. Get a quote before work begins so you know how much it will cost to fix your problem. Ask the emergency plumber for advice on whether the problem can wait until the next day.

Do ACT emergency plumbers need to be licensed and insured?

In the ACT, all plumbers must be licensed and meet eligibility requirements (such as having completed a relevant qualification). Double check that your chosen emergency plumber is licensed and has current public and products liability insurance to protect you if work doesn’t go to plan.

Is all emergency plumbing work guaranteed?

Ask this question when you call to organise the emergency plumber to head your way. Quality emergency plumbers aim to work as cost effectively and efficiently as possible and guarantee their work. If the plumber you call won’t guarantee, try someone else.

Do emergency plumbers service all of Canberra?

Many emergency plumbers service all areas of Canberra 24-7, but some only restricted areas so ask by phone or check their website. If you’re in a real state, with water gushing everywhere for example, you’ll want a plumber who can get to you quick sharp.

What if my emergency plumbing problem persists?

If your problem persists after the emergency plumber has left, don’t hesitate to call them back. Reputable emergency plumbers aim to get things fixed right the first time and are happy to guarantee their work.

Around Town Plumbing offers outstanding service in the Canberra region. I called them out to look at a hot water service while I was travelling and my daughters were looking after the house. They were out within a few hours and sorted out the problem with no fuss. Excellent communication and professional rapid service. Fully recommended to anyone.

Priority One Plumbing offers a 24 hour service. I called then late after 11 pm and they came without hesitation to fix my gas leak. He found the cause of the issue and did a temporary fix at night. Then he came the next day to do the leak detection test and do further to fix it permanently. Very satisfied with their service and would recommend everyone to use them.

Tuggeranong Plumbing is my first priority to call for any sort of plumbing issues. I called them in the morning to do the booking, they came over in the afternoon and explained the process of replacing our water heater. Very clean and efficient. Very good price and the job was done on the same day. I will recommend them to all family and friends.

Have heard a lot of good things about Paramount Plumbing and am likely to give him a go next time: https://www.paramountplumbingandgas.com.au/

We have a recurring problem with micro-roots in our sewage line where it changes from PVC pipe into the clay pipe connection to the council’s sewage main. Jet blasting always succeeds in clearing it. I accepted CanberraBlockedDrainServices’ quote for that work and a subsequent camera inspection to check for broken pipes. CBDS performed the jetting and the camera inspection. Their plumber SMS’d a photo of the camera screen (showing a collapsed pipe, but the camera date & time showed as 7:28pm the previous day and a distance of 22m to the break) and a site photo showing the location of the break in paint (~2m from the IO, not 22m). He advised to fix the pipe as the blockage would soon re-occur. CBDS provided a quote of ~$5,200 to fix the broken pipe (digging up and replacing the pipe). I declined it because it seemed excessive.

My son, a builder in Sydney, (for labour + expenses) exposed the whole pipe from the last IO to the sewer main connection where marked by CBDS, the only section where the blockage could occur. Surprisingly the entire length was unobstructed (checked via inspection port) and in pristine condition – no broken pipe!!! Had I accepted the CBDS quote I would have wasted $5,200!

I wrote to CBDS and invited them to offer a resolution to the expenses I incurred because of their erroneous advice. I received a response which offered contorted explanations but didn’t address at all the indisputable fact that there was no broken pipe (I still wonder about the “mysterious” photo). They clearly didn’t appreciate the wisdom of coming to a mutually satisfactory accommodation. I replied, pointing out the inaccuracies in their reply and advised that I would take this further. I haven’t heard from them since.

Draw your own conclusions…

Having rung two of the above services in an emergency, one that I left a message and still haven’t gotten a call back and another that only had an opening 4 day’s later, I was super impressed by *6 Star Plumbing and Hotwater*, who not only answered at an ungodly hour, but were also there within the hour to fix what had become a flood.

0448 844 911 – answered within 2 rings and has a team of plumbers of a roster so can really respond to emergencies on a 24/7 basis. Our spouting mixer tap was taken care of within 45mins and saved us from what could have been a shopping mess.

Excellent service! Friendly and very knowledgeable plumber. My job was straight forward, but Daniel persisted till he found the root cause of the problem. Was upfront about all scenarios and kept me informed throughout the diagnosis procedure. Highly recommended.

Damian Peacock from Running Plumbing is great. We have used him twice now over five years, our last emergency being a couple of weeks ago. He is easily contactable by mobile phone or email, returned our calls and emails promptly, attended and fixed our problems very promptly, and went to some trouble rescheduling other jobs to sort our problems out. We are very impressed with him. Next time we need a plumber, he’s it!
