No matter what your age, dance classes are a fantastic way to have fun, boost confidence, improve fitness, get your groove on and even learn new moves. Dancing is fabulous for children, teens, adults and seniors. With so many dance styles to choose from, including ballroom, ballet, tap, jazz, funk and hip-hop, there are classes for every personality and skill level.

In this article, we’ll outline the qualities to consider when choosing dances classes and a dance studio, and share where to find the best in Canberra.

What makes a great dance class?

Choosing the right dance class will keep your motivation levels high and ensure the right fit for age, personality and objectives.

It can be helpful to keep the following in mind when choosing a dance class.

  • Age appropriate. Different dance classes cater for different age groups—young kids, teens, adults and seniors. You’ll want to make sure the dance class you choose is age-appropriate.
  • Dance style. Dance studios differ in what they teach. Some cover a broad spectrum of styles and others zero in on one genre of dance. Check out dance studios for a style that suits your dance aspirations.
  • Quality teachers. Friendly and experienced teachers are essential to a fulfilling dance class. You want teachers to inspire and make you feel confident. The best teachers will bring out the best in students of all levels and ages.
  • Flexible schedules and price. Dance studios should have flexible schedules through the week and on weekends. Price is always important, so compare a few dance classes to get a feel for the market and then choose one that suits your budget. Also consider that professional training will be more expensive than dance classes held only for fun.
  • Cleanliness. Dance studios should be neat, clean and tidy, with a quality hygiene regime.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to take dance classes?
This varies depending on the type of dance class, the level of teaching required (for example, beginner versus professional), whether you want individual tutoring or a group class, location and more. It’s best to head online to check out dance studio websites for costs.
My child has never been to a dance class. How do I pick the right one?
It’s important to choose a dance studio that shares the same values you do, one that can meet your child’s needs and consider your child’s personality type. Check out dance studio websites to read about their philosophy, approach and values and then talk to teachers about what you want your child to get out of dance classes.
Do dance studios offer free trials?
Some do and some don’t. Some also offer trials for a nominal fee. You can also ask if the dance studio will allow you to sit and observe a class, to get a feel for how things work.
I’ve never danced in a class before. How do I prepare?
Most dance studios cater well for beginners and don’t require advance preparation to get your groove on. Teachers understand that not everyone is super coordinated or able to learn at the same speed. First and foremost, quality teachers just want you to have fun and enjoy a bit of exercise. They’re not there to judge.
How do I know if the dance instructors are good?
A good dance studio will have profiles on dance teachers on their website, listing their qualifications, experience and even sharing some of their personal beliefs. You can also chat to staff at dance studios about the type of teacher you want based on what you want out of your dance class.

What about Vieira Dance School of Excellence?? They cater to all ages from toddlers to teens to adults and the owner is an exceptional teacher in Canberra having trained as a Ballet dancer in England and Germany as well as dancing with Circus Krone!!
I don’t think that this article has been properly researched if researched at all? There are many dance studios in Canberra with very talented teachers who have trained students that have gone on to have professional dance careers. Quite disappointing that none of those studios has had a mention.

Good advice for teenage and children wanting to learn. As far as adults go, check the style of music that you will dance to matches your likes and that there is a welcoming student base that isn’t cliquey. I’ve found Audacity Dance at the Belconnen Arts Centre to be my cup of tea with modern music, good and friendly bunch of adults (18 and up with average late 30s and 40s) and excellent teachers.
