Blood borne diseases - big problem?

His Chiefliness is well fired up, taking high dudgeon at reported (somewhere) comments by the Liberals’ Jeremy Hanson that HIV and Hep C in the prison is a “small problem”.

Mr Hanson’s comments were reported in local media and made in relation to a proposed needle exchange at the Alexander Maconochie Centre.

Mr Stanhope said they displayed a gross insensitivity towards the issue of transference of the diseases.

“For the shadow minister on health and corrections to have made these comments is unacceptable and shows a lack of understanding of these very important issues,” Mr Stanhope said.

“I call on the leader of the opposition to either contradict what his colleague has said or offer Mr Hanson counsel on the inappropriate nature of his comments.”

Not busy enough running a government that he’s running the opposition now as well?

I heard a number of interviews with Jeremy Hanson and it was 100% clear that he was referring to the one reported (but possibly erroneously?) case of Hepatitis transmission in the AMC. Mr Stanhope is being disingenuous in his criticism.

Of course there will have been more than 1 case of transmission in the last 18 months, because not all will be known about. And it would also be virtually impossible to know whether transmission was via dirty syringe/needle, or some other means (e.g. a bloody fistfight).
