Brendan’s novel youth policy – ask the youth.

By johnboy - 12 September 2005 2

Brendan Smyth has put out a media release about the tendency of young Canberrans to go somewhere else when they complete their studies.

He raises the novel idea of actually surveying young people. As he points out most people who bang on about youth issues are getting a bit long in the tooth.

Personally I think it’s great that young Canberrans spend a few years away before choosing (or not) to come back. But I would suggest that the cost of housing is the kicker. But young canberrans being what they are I think it’s mad to worry too much.

They need to spread their wings and fly before coming home to roost.

What’s Your opinion?

Always thought Roslyn Dundas had a good grip on youth issues. Shame she was a democrat, as one of the more pro-active assembly members she is missed.

This seems a good idea but frankly people with no life experience cannot really give you the right answers.

Indeed, the can give you part of the correct answer, or solution, but things as such need to be looked at in a holistic way.

As for spending some time away, I think its a great idea. They should get out there and see the rest of Australia and how it operates before they comment to much on canberra, or on the rest of Australia with out having experienced it.

A good idea from brendan but as I said, it needs to be integrated into a wider survey of all sections of society so as to get a definitive picture that can be a basis for later policy.
