Canberra Centenary Coins Announced

The Royal Australian Mint has announced a new 20c coin to enter circulation this year marking the centenary of the city (along with a $5 silver proof coin).

On first impression, they look good.

The 20c is probably the best commemorative 20c they’ve ever made and more than makes up for 2011’s shocker.

The $5 isn’t fancy (no holograms or colour) but still a looker.

Why 20c? Why not $1 (=100c)?

20c seems a paltry amount for a commemorative coin. Perhaps someone from the Mint can weigh in with a reason?

That’s why they made the $5 silver coin.

Commemorative coins for Canberra’s Centenary – ok all well and good but NZ is minting commemorative coins for Dr Who’s 50th! now that’s an anniversary worth minting coins over!

So the design commemorates WBG’s plan for Canberra… the plan that wasn’t followed. Seems about right.

Why do I feel like I’m back in the Great Underground Empire waiting for a Grue to attack.

Some enormous cog that has been nibbled through by mice, over a period of a hundred years or so. Aussiemandias.

Steampunk, damned iPad. YOU SHOULD KNOW.

F&&& me, the centenary of Australia’s capital city is worth two bob?
