Chances are she doesn’t look like Catherine Zeta Jones

johnboy 12 August 2013 27

A 28-year-old Page woman will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with burglary and resisting arrest.

About 9.20pm police were called to a home in Hawker in relation to an alleged offender on the premises. The woman attempted to flee the scene upon police arrival.

A short time later the woman was arrested nearby and was later charged with burglary and escaping lawful custody.

Police will be opposing bail.

I thought the criticism of the headline was deliberately overdone – in a parody of extreme feminism (itself sexist).

If the criticism was intended to serious, then one must ask the question – if a story about a crime committed by a male was headlined ‘I’ll bet he’s no George Clooney’ – would that be sexist also?

Those Endone type opiate pain killers are highly addictive. They play tricks with the mind on old folks as well. They should be banned altogether.

They were the only pain killer that worked to reduce the intense pain after my cancer operation. Too many things having been banned just to stop the 1% idiot part of humanity harming themselves.

I think the headline was referring to Catherine Zeta Jones in the movie “Entrapment”, nothing to do with her actual looks. At least, that’s how I took it.

Much easier just to start pointing fingers and screeching about whatever type of ‘ism is even hinted at.

I hope Michelle_DB is hanging her head in shame and sheepishly offers an apology.

Say what you will, he’s the master of the evil headline.

The headline is rubbish – it doesn’t tell us anything about the story. But it speaks volumes about the headline writer and those who appreciate him (I assume it’s a him, how sexist of me). Casual sexism is an enduring cultural blind spot that we women are *still* enduring. [Cue: “Get a sense of humour!”]

Blokes put up with plenty as well (have a look at commercial TV advertising for example). We should still try to stamp it out, though.

Why? Why should we stamp it out? Does a headline like this actually hurt anyone?

Men and women are different. It’s one of the things that makes life interesting. Trying to “stamp out” gender byplay (rebadged here as “casual sexism”) would do nothing for the diversity and fun of life.

Is Michelle cranky because criminals are usually ugly, stupid, tattooed, trolls?

Is there something inherently sexist in noting that criminals are rarely good-looking?

Well I’ve no idea what mood John was in when he wrote the headline but it turns out she doesn’t look a thing like Catherine Zeta Jones. They couldn’t even pass for cousins.

I’m the father of a young woman, and the work supervisor of a number of women. I’ve worked tirelessly to advance the interests of women in my profession, as I see that it benefits the profession and the community as a whole. My wife is a staunch feminist, and takes no shit from any man. As is my mother, as is my sister. They’re all strong women, and I respect them and those like them. Overall, I would rate myself pretty highly as a supporter of womens rights.

Having said all that, I thought it was a funny headline. If that speaks volumes about me, then I’m happy for those volumes to be spoken. You may think differently, but I just think it means that I still have a sense of humour.

The Crimes are saying that she is Ex Capitals Player Janna Sladic.

It’d be fascinating to know how someone who plays at the national level of sport can end up as a heroin user rummaging through houses looking for the spare change under cushions. Assuming she wasn’t on the horse while playing basketball.

Rumour has it she became addicted to prescription opiates after an injury. It’s quite common if you have a dodgy doctor who doesn’t prescribe carefully. I have seen it many times.

And she’s been hanging around with Matthew Massey for years.

She probably was someone’s heroine once, so perhaps the CT is being ironic with their double entendre.

Ha or just can’t spell heroin..

What’s more they report that:

The prosecution opposed bail, arguing Sladic was likely to reoffend as she was a known heroine user.

So she’s a ‘heroine’ user?

More casual sexism.

Being an elite sportsperson doesn’t make you any less infallible than the rest of us. Rich, poor, good family, broken home, elite sports star, couch potato, it can get anyone.

As TISM once sang:

The rich kids becomes a junkie, the poor kid an advertiser. What a tragic waste of potential. gee the junkie’s not so good either…
