Cheap eats in Civic

By Duke - 17 June 2009 55

We’ve done similar posts to this before, but as a City office worker I’m wondering where the biggest, cheapest, bestest lunch is to be found in Civic.

The criteria is…………….tasty, under $10 and big enough that i’m not feeling hungry again by 3pm.  Bonus points if you can squeeze a can of coke in for that price.

So far i’ve found only two places that fit the bill:  Asian Cafe in West Row – great selection of dishes, rice and noodles + drink for $10 and IGA which does two pies/sausage rolls and a drink for less than $8!  Sunshine Cafe in the bus interchange, a business slowly dying and Civic’s only proper takeaway does a huge burger and a coke for $7.50.

I’m a big eater, so Ali Baba kebabs, poncy foccacias and noodles in a cardboard box don’t cut the mustard.

Suggestions please!

What’s Your opinion?

Tip Top (upstairs in Garema Place near Landspeed) – takeaway lunchbox (try the deep-fried chicken satay!) will leave enough change from $10 for a coke.

+1 again – Brilliant value even for sitting down.

+1 for burrito from Zambrero… it’ll fill you up.

Do yourself a favor and skip the can of coke… from one “big eater” to another.

La Pasa, near the post office in the Jolimont building. Two selections with rice/noodles, and a can of drink for $10.

I don’t know what they cost but sometimes I’ll get Mr Jessieduck to bring home a burrito from that Mexican place at the interchange if I can’t be bothered cooking dinner. They are very filling- I never finish mine.

The indian place in the food court of the Canberra Centre – big servings and the best potato and eggplant curry, ever.

The Japanese place next door’s not too bad either.
