A number of residents in Narrabundah were evacuated as firefighters worked to extinguish a shed fire this afternoon.

Five fire crews including two hazmat response units from ACT Fire and Rescue, an ambulance and ACT Police were called to the shed at around 2:15 pm after reports of thick plumes of black smoke coming from the structure in McKinlay Street.

Firefighters worked for more than one hour putting out the fire. The fire was contained to the shed. A number of nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution.

An ACT Emergency Services Agency spokesperson said McKinlay Street will remain closed whilst firefighters work to make the area safe.

The community is asked to avoid the area.
