I went to the Canberra Centre today and I saw a body (covered) in a stretcher being taken down the carpark ramp where Target is.

There were forensic police there and two firetrucks. A tarp was used to cover the passage way where the body was being taken to the car so that they were not in full view of the main street.

I was told by a person working at Target that the body had been there since 8am this morning and that they had closed off the entire carpark above Target.

Does anyone have any idea what happened?

UPDATE: Unconfirmed reports have it as a suicide from the car park roof. If so our condolences go to family and friends of the departed.

i was driving past the canberra centre when the police had the tarp up and i wondered what happened..so sad
there should be more light shed on suicide as it happens a lot more than people realise…i am only 20 and i already know 4 people whoo have commited suicide

A few years ago a friend of mine worked in a shopping center in Melbourne and they reported that there was at least one suicide a week similar to this. They were never reported in the media but the staff at the stores all knew. You would probably be shocked at how often this happens, these 2 people wont be the last and would not have been the first.

^ Oh wow, that is awful…

Sad thing is, there was a copy-cat incident, exactly one week later … A young woman jumped from just one storey, on Petrie St (also at Canberra Centre, from on top of the Aldi loading dock). She landed on her head and apparently survived – placed in an induced coma – though I think she died in hospital.
There was much less police presence, though forensics did attend, as the victim survived and was taken to hospital, unlike the previous incident, where the body was left overnight for ten hours before discovery, and then not removed until 2pm the following day. This was far more visible as street access to the Target carpark was blocked.
A bad week for the city centre.
My condolences to the families of both concerned.

Whatsup, the way I see it, if someone really wants to end their life, they’ll find a way. I’ve always believed that in many cases of someone surviving a suicide attempt – they actually intended to survive. The attempt serves as the desperate cry for the help that they really need.

Not reporting it so that people won’t copy? I guess that’s just insulting everyone’s intelligence. Remember when John Brogden tried to do it and the media labelled it as an ‘incident of self-harm’ ?? FFS.

Public awareness of mental health issues, depression and what can lead to suicide is a good thing indeed.

The media generally don’t cover suicides due to the fact that some people copy the successful ones ideas. There are many people around today that have tried but not managed to succeed in ending their life.

If people really want to know they will research it on the net. If its a half baked effort hopefully they won’t.

Yeah, fair enough.

Yeah, fair enough.

(one for each post).

Did this incident get much play in the media? It bothers me that suicide just doesn’t get talked about. I dig that it gets kept a little hush hush so as to not put the idea of suicide into the minds of the depressed – but the rate of suicide is alarmingly high. Perhaps public awareness of the incidents will help.

I came across this page by accident just now, & thought I would share my words, especially as I knew this wonderful person.

Thanks so much to those who shared kind words about a very special vibrant caring loving lady who would have given the shirt off her back (or cooked you the best meal) if you needed it. The funeral was very sad but it was lovely to celebrate the life a such a wonderul special friend with her other friends & family.

For those who think it is a bit of a joke & worth a laugh, I just hope that when your day comes (especially you beserk keyboard warrior) that people have a little more respect for your death. Though as far as I am concerned, I have absolutely no respect for you whatsoever.

Go get stuffed hippies.

Poor form, S4nta.

Both the family of the woman and her friends & workmates are still coming to terms with what was by all accounts, an unexpected event, one which is possibly a tragedy, or an accidental death.
And her workmates may read the site, who knows.

How about we save the ‘humour’ until either we know more, or go so far as not making jokes about a potential suicide?

Well done for doing it in the most public possible place so as to maximise the trauma to others.

That’s very unfortunate – and such a cruel end to a life. Rest in Peace.

Very sad.

I also hope nobody witnessed it, or if they did that they are given counselling – it’s not as pleasant thing to see happen.

Wow, that is really sad…

Hope this person is in a happier place:(

That’s horrible!
🙁

sad 🙁 i wonder who it was.

how terribly sad 🙁

That tallies with what I heard too. Police left about 3 o’clock. I doubt that there will be much in the press about it.

Suicide. Off the roof car park. Yeah, I know.
