Family Friendly Hairdressers

By PigsFly 29 March 2010 11

After a few years of going to the same hairdresser, we have decided that enough is enough. You see they have mucked around our appointments more often than not with the final straw being that they cancelled two out of three of them all because the hairdresser in question wants to get away early on holidays this weekend. Normally we would just grin and bear it but we had booked these appointments a while back because we really wanted our hair done for this weekend when we have lots on.

So, knowing the chances of getting an appointment anywhere else is going to be slim at best, we’ll try our luck – we’ll do the ring-around and see what we can get.

But for a more permanent solution, I thought that I would put it to all you local experts – where do you, your better half and your children go to get your hair done?

We are southside so if the recommendations are in this region that would be terrific.

PS. I know this has probably been done before but when I did a bit of a search over the weekend not one topic came up specifically for hairdressers that look after young children as well. And as this is what I’m really needing to find out, I think I need to cut to the chase. So please FIRE AWAY!

Hi there, if you are looking for a good hairdresser in Tuggeranong try Gowrie hair and Beauty at the Gowrie shops. New owners, new look and I know they have a colouring competition for the kids while they wait. They have a baby seat too. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions – I’ll start the ring around on Tuesday when I expect they would all be open again.

In the meantime, any more recommendations?

My daughter works at Vanity Fayre in Manuka and they are very family friendly but also very good. They are on Bouganville Street just near the pedestrian crossing

Tell her I said Hi 🙂

I used to work for Heinze at Vanity Fayre. He was a pr!ck to work for but a very good hairdresser.

Just shave their head or salad bowl and scissors.

John Brennan, upstairs in the Canberra Centre, has been excellent for my kids (4 & 7) – their weekend staff anyway (I havent gone during the week). Not too pricey, although there is a 10% surcharge on Sundays. I (male) have had my hair cut at the same time and had no complaints, although I am hardly a glamour, and a past it male, so I don’t really notice the difference between good and bad.

The Cut Company (?) at Erindale.

We used to frequent one of the more expensive City salons – 2 adults, 2 kids would leave little change from $400 (yes you’re reading correctly). We found Anne Marie a couple of months ago and haven’t looked back.

Do yourself (and your kids) a favour and give Samantha a call on 0423 279 620. She is one of the best cutters and colourists in Canberra (and I am the fussiest of fussy hair people), charges about half of what the salons do, and she is great with kids of all ages. Best of all, if you ask very nicely, she’ll come to you at your home, or she can book you into her lovely home salon (Barton, which is central to all sides of Canberra). I am sure that you’ll be delighted.

Let me know how you go!

Uno hair dressers in Holt. Fantastic. Sharyn is a brilliant hairdresser!! Wont bust the budget either.

I live in tuggeranong, but I make the trip every 8 weeks to arpege hair in gungahlin because Vicki (the owner) cuts my hair and my 4 year olds very well. better than anyone I have had on the the southside. but you need to book (she keeps her appointments!)

I go to Cataldo’s in the City although there is one at Woden as well. No chance of short notice appointments but all their staff are excellent and I have seen kids in there. Bit pricey though.

My husband insists on frequenting our local hairdresser at Calwell (Lisa’s I think). If you want a haircut with any thought put into it then in my opinion this is the place to avoid. Cheap though.
