Female Anglican bishop now a possibility

By GnT 29 September 2007 17

The Canberra Times has an interesting article on the front page today. The Anglican Church has clarified a rule which will clear the way for Canberra and Goulburn archdeacon Sarah Macneil to possibly become Australia’s first female bishop when Bishop George Browning retires early next year.

I think this is great news, but I’m surprised that we still have front page stories like this in 2007. Women shouldn’t have to prove themselves qualified to hold leadership positions in any industry. This should have made news 20 years ago. The Anglican Church is finally recognising that gender should not disqualify someone from serving God and the community in this way.

However Sydney Archbishop Peter Jensen is opposed to the move, and will continue to fight it, saying “I am disappointed that the matter has now been resolved in this way”. I can’t understand how this man can believe he is serving God while continuing such a sexist tradition.

And don’t even get me started on the Catholics.

UPDATED – Bishop George Browning himself has predicted a female replacement.

Over the years scholars have often wondered about the subtle questions posed in the scriptures, such as, was Noahs Ark really an ark, or an aircraft carrier?

Given that Jesus was a tank, as proven by AD, this is highly possible.

There have also been lots of movies made about tanks, and lots of movies made about spreading the word of god – I’m coming up with a theory here…

if jesus weighs as much as ralph but has no wheels then jesus must be a tank?

Maelinar 1:01 pm 02 Oct 07

Tanks do not have wheels – coincidence ?

captainwhorebags 12:01 pm 02 Oct 07

Ralph, Jesus did not have wheels.

Jesus saves…he shoots, he scores!

God also likes marines as marines ensure that heaven is always packed with fresh souls…

Yeah, but God likes A-10 Thunderbolts!

Maelinar 10:19 am 02 Oct 07

Jesus likes tanks.

If women are allowed to be ordained, then who will clean the churches and make supper for the local clergy?

Jesus was/is real – there’s been several movies made about him.

No, you are mistaking him for Arthur, who, if existed, would have been a war lord who proclaimed himself King of wherevershire in the Dark Ages.

Absent Diane 9:30 am 02 Oct 07

I don’t believe he existed – very little evidence. If he did – logic would dictate that he was just a war lord.

Thumper 8:58 am 02 Oct 07

Jesus was cool.

Just his words got twisted a bit by his followers.

You can’t believe he he doing what he is told when he promised to do what he is told? Scandal!!

Oh, and Jesus loves you, Woody.

The Anglican church on Canberra has had female priests for a while now, it’s just taken a while for one of them to gain enough seniority to be a viable contender for a top job.

But what will she do when she’s menstruating? The Good Book warns all and sundry to stay away from women when the painters are in, and insists that such women take the week off (and presumably not drive, because then her car will be ‘unclean’). She’ll also need to sacrifice a couple of turtles (seriously – WTF does Yahweh have against turtles?) when she’s ‘clean’.

I’ve course I’m being silly. Everybody knows Jeebus cultists get to pick and choose which parts of the infallible word of of their ineffable galactic pixie they’ll follow, and which are just inconvenient.
