The Canberra Times has an interesting article on the front page today. The Anglican Church has clarified a rule which will clear the way for Canberra and Goulburn archdeacon Sarah Macneil to possibly become Australia’s first female bishop when Bishop George Browning retires early next year.
I think this is great news, but I’m surprised that we still have front page stories like this in 2007. Women shouldn’t have to prove themselves qualified to hold leadership positions in any industry. This should have made news 20 years ago. The Anglican Church is finally recognising that gender should not disqualify someone from serving God and the community in this way.
However Sydney Archbishop Peter Jensen is opposed to the move, and will continue to fight it, saying “I am disappointed that the matter has now been resolved in this way”. I can’t understand how this man can believe he is serving God while continuing such a sexist tradition.
And don’t even get me started on the Catholics.
UPDATED – Bishop George Browning himself has predicted a female replacement.
