The Murdoch press is reporting that Optus is launching their Canberra 3G service in Canberra. Which prompts two questions:

1) Do they have any decent handsets?

2) Do they operate in a GSM/GPRS environment when the 3G service is unavailable?

If it’s OPTUS, then it’s bound to be crappy!

only really adds

Only? Only! Thats a big whack of tech for ‘only’.

I’ve been doing a littel investigation ito this myself and have found that there are quite a few 3G phones out there that have cought my eye. Unfortunatly they have been unavailable in Canberra due to there being no 3G network.
I personally like the Sony Ericsson Z700i.
And in answer to question 2, they do operate in a GSM/GPRS environment when the 3G service is unavailable. The 3G only really adds video calls, streaming video and internet facility.
