“What was that big bang?”

Local social media pages came alive with the all-too-common question on Saturday night, around 11 pm.

“Ok, seriously, did you hear a loud bang?”, a post to the Canberra Notice Board Group on Facebook read.

“Yuuup, that was a BIG one!” someone replied. “Think it came from Lyneham area? I’m in Downer. Nearly came out of my skin it startled me so much!”

“Hell yes,” another read. “My house and windows aren’t taking the news well.”

“All the neighbours in my street are freaking out,” said another.

Other commenters from as far as Casey and Ainslie reported hearing it too.

But put all the images of exploding meth labs out of your head – a video by a group member under the pseudonym of ‘Sophie Meadow’ cleared the air.

Footage taken from security cameras mounted to the poster’s house appeared to show a large explosion, followed by short burst of fireworks, several hundreds of metres away in the distance.

Sophie subsequently told Region: “We get a lot of fireworks and improvised explosive let off in Kaleen”.

“Obviously by kids who find that fun for whatever reason. They like the drain system that runs through the centre of the suburb because they amplify the explosive effect!”

However, she say this was distinctively different, prompting her to check the security cameras.

“This one was slightly further afield than usual but it was definitely loud and reverberating.

“We are only about 100 metres from the drains but this was in a completely different direction this time – my guess is this went off somewhere down near the Gungahlin Drive Extension or perhaps the underpass that loops under the Barton Highway.”

ACT Policing didn’t receive any reports about large bangs on Saturday night, with a spokesperson saying “the closest we had was a party in Macgregor where the people were throwing aerosol cans into a fire”.

“That wouldn’t have been the incident shown in this photo.”

Loud bangs and fireworks are a common occurrence in the Belconnen area, at least out west, and any time from about 8pm to 3am. Every attempt to inform authorities has been met with a “if they’ve stopped there’s not much we can do about it now”. No wonder people don’t bother reporting to the police.

Thankfully, I never get invited to that sort of party. 😉

My security camera also caught this incident – indirectly. It was looking away from the source but I could judge the direction from the shadows cast on the ground by small trees. Judging by the time from flash to bang, I think it was centred on Lyneham Ridge. I favour a meteorite.

I agree with you John, it was a meteorite. The trees in the right foreground are illuminated progressively immediately before the explosion.

Lucky it didn’t hit a house.
