Jon Stanhope and shadow treasurer Richard Mulcahy are trading insults today over the issue of land tax.
Mulcahy says Canberrans are paying more tax, and at a higher rate than Sydney, thanks to Stanhope.
He says the land tax payable for a median-priced home in Canberra is $5,411, based on a property valued at $386,500, while in Sydney, land tax based on a median-priced house of $495,700 is $2,542.90.
But Stanhope says he actually decreased the marginal rate for the tax in the last budget, and if there is more revenue, it’s because the land values have increased.
He says Mulcahy is being selective with his information.
