Stanhope & Mulcahy argue over land tax

By IBN News 19 October 2006 6

Jon Stanhope and shadow treasurer Richard Mulcahy are trading insults today over the issue of land tax.

Mulcahy says Canberrans are paying more tax, and at a higher rate than Sydney, thanks to Stanhope.

He says the land tax payable for a median-priced home in Canberra is $5,411, based on a property valued at $386,500, while in Sydney, land tax based on a median-priced house of $495,700 is $2,542.90.

But Stanhope says he actually decreased the marginal rate for the tax in the last budget, and if there is more revenue, it’s because the land values have increased.

He says Mulcahy is being selective with his information.

Read about it in IBN News.

Can’t you all see ? His social conscience is all just a strategy about him getting a gig in the UN or some other global organisation after he gets canned as mayor.

His economic management is so poor it beggars belief.

All the social policy in the world won’t help if basic needs can’t be met.

stanhope has singularly destroyed the ACT with his economic mismanagement.

He’s about to get voted out, so what does he care?

What a classic use of poitical strategy; debunk the oppositions claim without actually addressing it, then flount some other meaningless crap as if to justify your first position.

“But chief minister Jon Stanhope said $60 million would be lost to government revenue each year if land tax was abolished.

“That’s a lot of primary health care, a lot of schooling, a lot of garbage collection and a lot of policing that will have to be funded from some other source,” he said.

Well, he’s being creative. However, land values have shot through the roof due to rampant real estate speculation. Stanhope’s just profiteering off of it. But then again, so are many, many bastards.

I am paying more money, much more money. Stanhope is being selective with his use of figures.

Or is that lying?
