Two schools in southern Canberra were placed into lockdown as a precaution today (9 August) when police were responding to an alleged dangerous driving incident and had to chase several suspects.

ACT Policing said officers saw a white BMW hatchback, reportedly stolen from a home in Yarralumla that morning, allegedly driving dangerously along Mugga Lane around 1 pm.

The car was then allegedly seen doing a burnout and driving dangerously near Calwell High School.

When it came to a stop, two teenage boys tried to run on foot but were soon caught and arrested.

A police spokesperson said two other males fled the scene and one was later seen running through the grounds of St Francis of Assisi Primary School.

“As a precaution, both schools were placed into lockdown,” the spokesperson said later that afternoon.

“A search confirmed that neither of the two males wanted by police were located in either of the schools.

“Police are continuing to circulate nearby suburbs in an effort to locate the remaining offenders.”
