Wild boxcutting action around the Northbourne flats

By johnboy - 7 August 2013 16

ACT Policing is investigating two separate incidents of assault in Braddon last night where a man produced a box cutter knife (Tuesday, August 6).

About 9:30pm police were called to Northbourne Flats where a 54-year-old man had received a stab wound to his leg from an unknown man.

The victim was walking home from Block 20 to his unit about 8.30pm when a man has approached him, demanding his wallet. The victim was then stabbed in the leg with a box cutter knife before the offender fled. The victim was taken to The Canberra Hospital for treatment.

About 10.30pm an 18-year-old woman was walking through Haig Park, towards Northbourne Flats, when she was grabbed from behind by a man. The man produced a box cutter knife and attempted to cut the strap of her handbag. The woman sustained a cut to her clothing and a small cut to her face.

The man is described as being in his early 20s, approximately 178cm (5’10”) tall, with dark hair, wearing a dark coloured hooded top and Doc Martin boots.

Anyone who may have seen this man or can assist police with the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.

Where do you get all that from a lame Simpsons quote?

I did not know it was a Simpsons quote – I thought brownstreak was paraphrasing my whine. Clearly my education has been lacking. I specialised in Futurama, not the Simpsons.

So, you’re saying that Canberrans should rely on vigilante protection/justice in areas with a high resident:douche ratio? ….

Sorry to be a twat, but I think you mean a high douche:resident ratio…..

So, you’re saying that Canberrans should rely on vigilante protection/justice in areas with a high resident:douche ratio? And you’re saying that in order for me to feel happy with the community’s level of safety from scum, that I should don the garb of some superhero and start cracking skulls? And also, that in order to protect 18yo girls walking home in the evening from criminals, that I should become a criminal myself?

Really brownstreak? Really?!?

Aside from the ever-present need for costumed vigilateism in our fair city (which I support wholeheartedly), I would be more concerned with the surely upcoming box-cutter law reform’s.

It is just a matter of time before laws are scrutinised or tightened. It makes ot harder for someone who wants to go cut boxes to go about their own business cutting boxes.

While injuries can vary in seriousness, you can walk into any emergency department and see the results of these devices going off in someones hands, usually someone elses kids hands to be more precise. Could your child be next?

I believe that any form of Box-cutting or Utility knife buy back will only drive the trade in these sharp, convenient, implements underground and into the hands of Children, OMG’s, more children and Terrorists………sneaky, budget savvy terrorists. Late last year, Customs said that 1100 box cutters were detected in 2012 and intercepted as result of ‘intelligence-led approach to targeting people and goods arriving into Australia.’

I think that a better way to deal with the problem is to attack the issue at the source……….A man whom I believe is called Stanley…….

Think of the children ppl.

Don’t laws against carrying knives already exist, or is that only in NSW?

I doubt that requirement/legislations would cover “box cutters” due to their utility and extensive application in normal business (tho in the park at night, highly debatable); probably why the descriptive term had changes from “Stanley Knife” to “Box Cutter”.

“…these human-sized butt-plugs?

As Director of the Association of Australian Butt-plug Manufacturers I protest at this slur against the highly internationally-regarded products manufactured by my members. This at a time when our venerable Australian industry is under threat from cheap overseas and Internet-sourced products of demonstrably inferior quality.

If, however, the courts wished to issue work orders to the people to whom you refer, we do have openings for testers of our new Jumbo and Jupiter lines, particularly in the light of suggestions that our hand-sanded Pine and Tasmanian Oak products may be causing splinters.

“…About 10.30pm an 18-year-old woman was walking through Haig Park, towards Northbourne Flats, when she was grabbed from behind by a man…”

This is the same spot featured in an October 2010 article from Johnboy himself: http://the-riotact.com/on-haig-park/29179

Comments for that post note that Haig Park is frequented by people of the douche variety.

So I’d like to ask: with so much obvious public concern, with so many incidents, with such apparent need to secure this area, is it not possible to get the TAMS roo-sniper squad, or any of the plethora of national security agencies, or even Duntroon cadets, or, hey, if you don’t mind a crazy idea like the ACT Police, to literally camp out in this area and disappear these human-sized butt-plugs?

Doc Martin boots?

It’s actually ‘Doc or Dr Martens’ which aren’t particularly cheap so someone’s got to fund his lifestyle..

Government guys only just recently removed the old rotting memorials to the Nothbourne murder victim from a few years back (altough creepily they left behind a pair of shoes). I haven’t noticed the perps in court yet. Will the” juvenile” still be held in Bimberi even though he must be twenty by now?
