This weekend marks the beginning of Floriade. There are also two twilight markets, a fireworks festival and SAFIA performing at ANU Bar. What are your plans?

1. Floriade opening weekend
Australia’s biggest celebration of spring returns to Canberra this weekend. The first week of the month-long flower festival explores food, art, culture, music and fashion. Floriade is open 9am to 5pm weekdays and 9am to 5.30pm on weekends. Entry is free. More info.

2. Pop-up street food area The Slab opens at the Old Bus Depot Markets
Enjoy gourmet German sausages from The Brathaus, handmade Parisian toasted sandwiches from Get Lucky and Thai street food from Morks at the launch of pop-up street food area The Slab. Located at the Old Bus Depot Markets, The Slab is open on Sundays from 10am to 4pm. More info.

3. Night Market Canberra at Realm Park
Canberra’s largest outdoor night market focused on fashion, homewares and lifestyle products is on again this Friday from 4pm. Presenting a curated selection of pop-up shops from local and interstate designers, live music, entertainment, a licensed bar and street eats – there is something for everyone. It’s at Realm Park on Bunbury Close in Barton. More info.

4. Hustle&Scout twilight fashion market with The Forage
Get ready to hustle, scout and forage. This Saturday afternoon Hustle&Scout is throwing a huge gathering of some of Australia’s finest fashion designers, street food retailers, bars, and bakers of all things sweet. 100+ stalls, street art demos and lots of food. It’s on from 2pm to 7pm at the Old Bus Depot Building in Kingston. More info.

5. Tkay Maidza at Academy
Fresh from Splendour in The Grass and touring with Mark Ronson, Tkay Maidza is coming to Canberra this Friday night. It’s part of her last Australian headline tour for 2015, and she’s supported by Willow Beats, Porsches and L.K. McKay. More info.

6. The Environmental Film Festival comes to Canberra for the first time
The Environmental Film Festival Australia (EFFA) is a not-for-profit annual film festival examining environmental issues. Running from Friday to Sunday at Palace Electric, the films cover topics including biodynamic farming in Denmark to coal mining in Australia. More info.

7. Varsity Derby League at Southern Cross Stadium
Varsity Derby League’s Capital Carnage will rip it up on the track with Sydney City Smash on this Saturday at Southern Cross Basketball Stadium. If you want to see fast, hard-hitting derby this is one not to miss. Doors open 3pm. More info.

Diamond Phoenix Dragon Boat Club invites women of all ages for a fun morning paddling on Lake Burley Griffin this Saturday from 11am. Meet at Lotus Bay in Yarralumla and look for the team in red, black and yellow. More info.

Chifley Preschool’s annual spring fair is on again this Sunday from 10am to 1.30pm. Enjoy cakes, a sausage sizzle, a jumping castle and plenty of kids activities. More info.

12. Gunning fireworks festival
Enjoy over one hour of fireworks demonstrations at the Gunning fireworks festival this Saturday. In addition to fireworks, there will also be amusement rides, market stalls, face painting, fairy floss and live music. Gates open at 3pm and the evening finishes up at 9pm. More info.

Number 12, “Leave Canberra and go to Gunning” would be reasonably high on my list, if it wasn’t for all the other “Leave Canberra and go…”… options which are available to me.

Personally, I will be enjoying the bush about 20 km NE of Braidwood, with a quick break on Saturday night for a beer at the Braidwood Services Club.

Good list, I’m finally glad winter is over. I’d ad Floriade to the list though as I think that’s probably the biggest attraction in Canberra.
