A Chance of Snow tonight

The good folk at the Bureau of Meteorology have made the call:

Scattered showers, falling as snow on the ranges and lowering to around 600 metres overnight, with the chance of some light snowfalls locally. Fresh and gusty westerly winds.

Time perhaps to crack out the mittens, warm up the gluhwein and keep and eye out for one of natures sublimated wonders!

Well a brass ball freezing -5 for the ride in today.

By the mitchell turn off, my water bottle was starting to freeze.

Good time – PS Cheers to the random cyclist who asked me if I was ok – I was just hitching up my leg warmers under my trackies, hard to do whilst riding and wearing 2 pairs of gloves….

The cold also brings out the chat in people whilst waiting for a little green man – a good thing….

What was magic was riding past Yerrabi pond with the pre dawn orange sky reflected in the lake and the most magic silhouette (sp) of 4 kayakists doing their pre dawn saunder around the lake…I actually said f*ck yeah out loud it was that striking.

Just got back from evening walk and it is fuh-reeeezing! Stafford refused to leave the comforts of home so I had to take dog #3!

Weezie – your Staffy is a pussy! My skinny little whippet (who wears a big fur coat when outside on cold winter days – but is usually inside when we’re at home) braved the cold and sleet for his daily run.

All Staffies are pussies. Come to think of it, all dog owners complaining about their precious’s being scared by nasty fireworks are probably staffy owners. 😛

When I let the dogs out for their bedtime wee, if it’s really cold and/or raining, the big boy stops abruptly and tries to zoom back in, while the geriatric 13 year old with 3 legs just hops stoically out to the lawn. She’s tough, while he hates rain (and mud).

How’d he taste?

Galahs aren’t that silly! But when we had the first taste of winter a few weeks back, I found a freshly dead King Parrot on his back in my garden. I’ve never seen a King Parrot up my way (seen a few in Canberra though), and figure he got lost, and then the cold got him. He looked to be in good condition (except for the being dead bit).

Yep, as the NW comes at the start of a ‘classic’ front, that rolls up from the Bight, hits Adelaide and then sweeps us (SE NSW). That’s usually the wettish start, then it swings westerly, then SW at the end (when it’s colder).

The western ranges looked fantastic this morning, a nice covering although it might not last long as it’ll be up on trees and bushes. Gingera (the low-looking flat backed mtn at the back) should keep something for a while though.

My deck was all iced up this morning, there’ll be frosts for the next few mornings, and then maybe more rain coming Sunday?

We are of like mind peterh. I have a bottle of Wild Brumby apple schnapps on ice …

MMMmmm Wild Brumby schnapps….

If the skies are clear tomorrow morning, the top end of Horse Park Drive will be the go for outstanding views of Brindys with icing on top.

A beanie wouldn’t have gone astray…

Looked nice, took some pictures, but the cloud band backdrop to the mountains means they won’t be outstanding pics. Forgot the bloody USB cable, so no posting this morning sorry.

I drink when it is really, really cold, at home. I don’t drink whilst out, as my livelihood revolves around being able to drive and visit clients.

You don’t exactly explain yourself. Presumably it is not because you are on-call 24×7, because then you couldn’t drink at home either. Don’t have money for a taxi and nobody willing to drive you, or can’t be trusted when you get on the firewater?!

as a recovering alcoholic, who drinks very little and in strict moderation, a few would be a few too many. Been there, done that, have the horrible memories to remind me.

2 shots last night were very nice. spaced over 2 hours, sipping them to slowly enjoy.

no hangover this morning, and the view of the mountains was awesome. shame i don’t have any clients up berridale way any more.

Clown Killer8:46 am 10 Jun 09

So did we get any snow overnight? It was dark when I left for work this morning, but the stars were out and there was ice (as opposed to frost) on my car – anyone got a view of the mountains?

Well that was interesting…. A nice icy 25km/h westerly pushed me all the way to Lyneham – beat my top speed – now 49.1km/h – it was a bit cold, but I was warm, just need some overshoes for my toes, they got pretty sore from the cold.

But I did forget to mention that unless it gets any cooler, there is a low chance of snow in Canberra tonight. But the wind coming of the snow covered Brindies will be bloody freezing cold tomorrow.

I”m pretty sure we got hail here. Definitely rain in Watson/Hackett.

Most of that moisture went around the Brindabella’s but a bit of it made it over Kambah. I’ve just walked outside in bare feet & the ground is bloody freezing cold & the rain droplets feel a bit like melted snow. It feels like I’m out at Perisher Blue on a cold day at the moment, with the cold breeze coming in from the Brindabella’s.

Well, the giant blob of wet is nearing the ACT and trying to fizzle but we should get something out of it. It’s got warmer here, now 3c! Still quite breezy.

Nice! If I get the posting I’m after I’ll be around Farnborough. I’d like to live in a small village one day though. One of those places where there’s only one pub and everybody knows you.

Exactly! And work for ther National Trust.

Oh, and form a band and play mod stuff 😉

I can play the spoons, does that count?

Clown Killer9:51 pm 09 Jun 09

Berridale and Bredbo are two one pub towns where everybody knows you that spring to mind without the hassel of having to put up with a nation full of whinging bloody English folk.

I’m thinking of moving there for a few years. Wiltshire, somerset or Gloustershire hopefully..

I’m returning to Blighty for a month soon, I wonder if I’ll notice a difference in the climate. Not much chance I suppose.

I’ve applied for a 2 year posting at work to go back to the UK. Here’s hoping…

My weather thing says it’s 2.6c outside right now, with a bit of a NW, and really high humidity. Barometer’s all over the place. Well, if any precip. makes it here, it’ll be snow, but it won’t settle in canberra unless there’s tons of it, the city generates too much heat nowadays.

There’s a nice bunch of moisture coming up our way from the SW, but this wind might push it away.

Pommy bastard9:17 pm 09 Jun 09

I’ll be visiting your old neck of the woods mate, I’ll say hello from you.

Bottle of scotch night. On the rocks..

Mmmmm, smooth…

N-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!!!!! Neat, or with a little drop of water.

Snow has been blowing around Canberra for the last few days, just none of it has settled. But hopefully some of it settles so that my snow dog can play in it. Otherwise I’ll have to sneak past Police roadblocks at Cooma to get down to Nimmitabel on the Monaro Highway.

BRRRRRRRRRR its cold out there…

For those of you who like to leave covering up the fernery till the last minute tonight is the night to cover em up or you’ll have frostbite tomorrow morning.

I remember last year the Bureau made this call and parents everywhere had to deal with disappointed kids when the next day dawned fine and sunny!

danman, is this the tradeoff between riding a bike and saving the environment, and driving a car and killing it?

as has been mentioned before, i don’t drink. well, i had better clarify, I drink when it is really, really cold, at home. I don’t drink whilst out, as my livelihood revolves around being able to drive and visit clients. Bring on the cold weather.

I always thought it was unfair that Canberra gets so cold, but we don’t get rewarded with snow. Holy moly! Snow!

I should buys some schnapps to celebrate.

I’m at 850m so expect some splatty stuff tonight. It’s already been snowing around Orange and Oberon, flakes are blowing off the mtns into Jindy, Tumbarumba and district has snow, and the sthn highlands are somewhat hopeful. It depends on how much moisture is around.

And then Frosts for Thursday morning, I reckon. Some forecasts have frosts for wednesday, but I don’t think we’ll get frosts while the blizzardy weather is going.

please, please please give me a snow day! I would love to phone the boss and say that i cannot come in due to being snowed in…

mmm…. gluhwein….. we may have set fire to someone’s cook top once dousing a pile of sugar cubes (suspended about a pot of gluhwein) in vodka then setting it alight, with the intention that it should melt into the gluhwein.
