Said the pot to the kettle. They have a point.

My dog is old and lazy and barely gets off the couch these days… But come about midnight when the possums are out having parties on the powerlines along the back fence, she barks and has her fun for awhile. She’s too old to be left home alone these days and lives my “Grandma” so there isn’t alot I can do about it.

The only complaint we’ve ever received is from our next door neighbour who has a dog that barks ALL day while they’re at work. They don’t believe their little precious furball could make so much noise. So while some owners may not be aware their dog is barking all day, others like to remain oblivious.

We went to the cops and naturally they can do nothing without knowing who but it’s just not on. Come and speak to us, instead of resorting to offensive, spineless letters in our mailbox.

If the letter commenced with “You have the most hated dog in the neighbourhood….” then you have a problem.
People who send these types of threats have already tried to solve barking dog problems with neighbours before and they have found from experience that the police or Domestic Animal Services will do little and even then they will not enforce the powers they have.
Some people do not deserve to have dogs and they are in denial that they cause any problems at all.

Dogs bark for all manner of reasons, boredom only being one of those. Most dogs feel the need to protect the house and bark to ward off anyone who comes near.

Having two dogs does help quite a lot. We had a dog who was getting destructive during the day but as soon as we got a second dog he calmed right down.

Even as a dog owner we find barking annoying. As soon as our dogs start making noise we are straight outside to calm them down. Unfortunately we live next to a laneway and some of the neighbourhood kids think it’s funny to bang on our fence and antagonise our dogs.

Judging by the tone of the post I’m guessing that the author doesn’t have any pets? They might be a little more sympathetic otherwise.

Just wanted to add this: I had a dog that was not a problem barker…until we went out. He would bark at nothing over long periods. Must’ve driven the neighbours crazy but here’s the thing: I had no idea until a neighbour slipped a note in our letterbox one day. I felt terrible that my dog had been causing these issues for our neighbours but no one ever approached me.

The short story is I went and had a chat with the neighbour who left the note, apologised and thanked her for letting me know. From there I was able to take steps to fix the problem. Had that one neighbour not let me know, I would’ve remained oblivious to the problem.

Don’t always assume the owner knows their dog is a problem.

I have had to do the same (I bang on the door, not knock) but it really didn’t solve the problem. I even recorded the barking during the day and played it back to them over the phone at 2.00am.
All this does is get them to change their phone number.
Recently, a magician moved into the neighbourhood. How do I know he/she is a magician?
Well yappy dogs have been disappearing.

How do you know the neighbour is well aware? Have you spoken to them? Or are you just assuming?

It’s even worse when they are left outside late at night and just keep barking while you’re trying to get to sleep. I had neighbours with one of them some years ago and approaching them to complain was a waste of time. They were so one-eyed they couldn’t believe their precious little dog could cause a problem. They let it roam and one day I was working in my front garden and it came at me. I had to restrain myself while simultaneously laughing at it and wondering how dumb it was. Thankfully most of my neighbours now have cats. The occasional two minute hissing session is wonderful compared to the previous daily barking that ran from 30 minutes to multiple hours every day.

It’s simply amazing what dog owners will do when there loving little yappy Furballs are threatened with eviction or worse.

Yeah. That will help resolve the issue, and will help to strengthen the terrific relationship you obviously have with your neighbours too.

… or barking continually over the weekend while their owners are away (and setting off other dogs within earshot as well). But hey, your right to have a dog that barks for hours on end – because the poor dog doesn’t know why it has been, in its perception, abandoned – trumps the right of neighbours to peaceful enjoyment of the interior of their own homes, correct?

Could not agree more with the above.
Sure, I get that you are frustrated with the situation, but your sarcastic tone doesn’t do anything for your cause.

There are a number of reasons why the dog could be barking– and please remember, this is someone’s beloved pet– so threatening “or worse” (and please, do feel free to explain what you mean by that) seems fairly extreme and quite frankly, an alarming statement to make.

Perhaps you would be best off approaching your neighbour and having a conversation face to face as suggested, or is it more a case of you would rather complain on the web and do nothing in real life?

Agree. My neighbours have 4 aggressive little mongrels – and I believe you need a permit for 4 or more dogs for a start. Have started the complaint process many times by filling out the forms (keeping a diary) – except when you’re not home much the diary doesn’t accurately indicate the situation…

That would be good if Domestic Animal Services (DAS not EPA), actually do what they say they will do. In my experience (with a large barking dog, not the yappy ones on the other side of our house), they failed to act – to the point where I went to the minister (John Stanhope), who acknowledged they dropped the ball in a massive way. I kept the diary and yet they failed to even come out and listen at the times I documented that the barking would be happening – they did absolutely NOTHING. Total fail.

The situation did end when the owner was bluffed into believing there was the reams of evidence they should have collected and that action would be taken. It was only luck that someone was brought into DAS to get things back on track. And all this in a rental property where the property managers told me that their tennant had the right to peaceful enjoyment of their property (que?) As you can see it still makes me arc up!

Canberra residents can have no confidence in the authorities here to solve any noise issues, whether it be a barking dog or a noisy music playing neighbour.
