I have heard from several sources that this morning at Lyneham High School a special assembly was called at which it was announced that short shorts for girls would be banned because some “female staff and male staff” found the exposed legs “offensive”.
The girls were told that any shorts they wore to school must be longer than 15cm from knee on ground to hem. Several said teachers then went around measuring. One person claimed to have been given a detention because hers were too short, despite the rule having only been announced today (although others said they hadn’t heard of anyone being penalised yet).
Lyneham High is a public school and currently has a colour code of blue or maroon tops with any kind of bottoms. As an outside observer, it seems like a lot of students there wear polos with the school logo, but it could just be that I know the kind of people who will wear school uniform shirts.
One girl said she wondered if the teachers were jealous of their legs while another thought that it was the kind of rule “that always gets put it when the principal goes away and someone else takes over”. No one thought it would seriously last for long (there’s only three weeks of school left anyway) and some thought there would be a lot more short shorts around this week, even on the boys, in protest.
