Almost 1260 drivers were caught speeding yesterday on the first-day speed cameras in Civic were adjusted to issue fines.
The speed limit in the city centre was dropped by 20 km/h to 40 km/h three months ago due to the high foot traffic around parts of Northbourne Avenue and Barry Drive but enforcement began yesterday.
More than 20,000 drivers were caught speeding in a two week trial period in June before fines started being issued.
While not all those caught speeding yesterday will be issued a fine, which are still in the process of being confirmed, around 60 to 70 per cent of the fines are expected to be passed on.
Motorists caught speeding by between 15 and 30 km/h can face fines of over $438 and three demerit points.
