ACT Policing has praised the awareness and responsiveness of the public after receiving reports of a suspicious person doorknocking in Weston yesterday afternoon (June 8).
About 1.30pm, a concerned member of the public contacted police and provided a description of a male who was conducting doorknocks on houses in Chapman.
ACT Policing’s Crime Targeting Team attended and detected a stolen white Nissan Pulsar on Hindmarsh Drive. When police attempted a traffic stop on the Nissan, the car drove off the road and the four occupants attempted to flee.
Police later apprehended the alleged driver of the stolen car in a backyard of a cul de sac in Weston. A short time later, members of the Specialist Response and Security (SRS) Team boarded a bus near Cooleman Court in Weston and took one adult male and two juvenile males into custody.
A 23-year-old Queanbeyan man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with driving whilst disqualified, failing to stop when requested by police, and driving a stolen motor vehicle. The juveniles have been released without charge and an 18-year-old man is assisting police with enquiries. The investigation is ongoing.
Sergeant Shane Broomby, from ACT Policing’s Crime Prevention team, said that people should contact police on 131-444 if they are suspicious about the people who doorknock areas, but fail to establish their bona fides when challenged.
“People, such as charity workers, who have a genuine need to doorknock, will provide identification when asked. Home owners have every right to be suspicious if people appear to knocking on doors in the neighbourhood with a potential intent to break into a home, or to commit a crime,” Sergeant Broomby said.
