8:30 pm: ACT Policing has confirmed a man has died in a single-vehicle car crash in Belconnen this evening.
The accident happened at about 5:30 pm when the vehicle left Kingsford Smith Drive near Verbrugghen St, Melba, and hit a tree.
A passenger in the vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police are still confirming the man’s identity and attempting to contact his next-of-kin.
This afternoon’s incident was the second fatal accident on ACT roads in less than 24 hours and the third in a matter of weeks.
Investigations are continuing.
7 pm: Motorists are being asked to avoid Kingsford Smith Drive in the Belconnen area after a serious accident this evening.
ACT Ambulance, ACT Fire & Rescue and ACT Policing are at the motor vehicle incident on Kingsford Smith Drive, Melba. Further details are expected later tonight.
Kingsford Smith Drive is closed in both directions between Companion Crescent and Dolling Crescent. The road is likely to be closed for a number of hours.
Verbrugghen Street is also closed at Chinner Crescent.
Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.
It’s the second serious accident in less than 24 hours, after a 20-year-old man died in a head-on collision on Hindmarsh Drive about 10:55 pm on Thursday.
