Power has been restored to the Selwyn Snow Resort, clearing one of the final stumbling blocks for the resort’s opening in June.

More than three years after fire destroyed the facility, the addition of electricity has now completed the journey to get the lights back on again at Selwyn and powering up the lifts and snow-making machines for testing requirements.

Group manager Ewan Murdoch said the electricity restoration was exactly what the resort needed.

“All our infrastructure is sitting here waiting to go,” he said.

“We’ve had a great rebuild. All our lifts are better than before – it’s re-born. It’s the same resort, but it’s transformed. It’s brought us up to the 21st century.”

Logistics played a key part, including monthly meetings with Essential Energy and Transgrid to get supply restored.

“It’s a great relief to have power back on again here,” Mr Murdoch said.

“We lost a lot of it in the fire, so a lot of this is new – new snow guns as well. We’re a huge step closer to making snow in May.”

The Snowy Mountains experienced their first snowfall over Easter as a cold southerly change hit the region, leaving 2 cm of snow in its wake.

Restoration of the electricity supply means the Selwyn Snow Resort is well on track for its scheduled opening on 10 June.

The new resort has been transformed for its grand re-opening in 2023, with the completion of the significantly expanded and integrated ‘Selwyn Centre’ that will house all guest facilities and services in the one building.

The new Selwyn Centre will include an expanded Ski & Snowboard Hire, enhanced food and drink offerings and improved toilet amenities.
