ACT Policing has put out a plea for witnesses regarding a Gungahlin barber shop arson attack, during which one of the offenders set themselves on fire.

Officers received reports that two people had arrived at the Gold Blade Barbers shop front on Hibberson Street on bicycles at about 11:40 pm on Saturday (6 July) before breaking in.

ACT Policing said after smashing the glass front door, it was believed the pair spread an accelerant throughout the store and set it on fire.

“In the process of spreading the accelerant, one of the offenders has inadvertently set themselves alight,” the statement outlined.

“This was quickly extinguished by the other offender.”

Police said the offenders then fled on bikes in the direction of Gungahlin Place before officers arrived on the scene.

While the store’s fire suppression system contained the fire, the premises have been significantly damaged.

A number of witnesses have already been interviewed, but police are interested in speaking with anyone else who may know about the incident or those connected to it.

“This includes anyone with knowledge of a person incurring burns to their body and/or clothing over the weekend,” a police statement read.

Anyone with information that could assist police can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, quoting reference 7792682. Information can be provided anonymously.
