Belconnen Markets revamp plans attract mixed reviews

By johnboy - 30 June 2010 11

belconnen markets plan

The Canberra Times has a story on the plans to redevelop the Belconnen Markets and the mixed feelings of the existing operators to the plans:

A development application lodged with the ACT Planning and Land Authority shows the Rock Development Group project includes a mixed-use, seven-storey apartment block, including 212 apartments, a two-storey underground parking facility and a 3000sqm ground floor office. The existing site is a temporary parking facility with 211 spaces.

The development application is up on the ACTPLA site and you can make comments until 9 July.

The markets are shot these days, once you could hardly move in the place for people, but now it is almost deserted. Their prices, which were the attraction, have risen to above Woollies prices for most items. (It all fell to pieces when Mother Natures went broke)

That’s bad!

So they might as well build the units. The owners bought the place for about $2.5 M back whenever. They will make a handsome profit I suspect when they decide to shut the markets down.

So what about the caged carpark development? There’s been signs up promoting it for 6 months or more and all they’ve done so far is put up a fence.

If we are gong to talk accomodation options how about some houses? You listening John boy? Even small blocks in the ‘burbs is better than – generally – poor built boxes in this type of development!

Actually, I hate those stupid suburbs full of tiny blocks with oversized houses on them. If you are going to live in a residence with a yard too small to swing a cat, then you might as well live in an apartment building.

I do agree with you concerning the poorly built quality of many of these places, unfortunately, the small blocks in the ‘burbs have poorly built houses on them too.

For those who weren’t immediately sure where this is, it is HERE.

Not really the markets in my opinion. Although until that hotel & Bunnings were built a few years ago, they were the only things close.

That said, I think this is actually a pretty good spot for this kind of development. Central, vacant land not used of anything. Won’t block the views of existing residents like some of the developments near Lake G. Only downside I can think of it that it is next to quite a busy intersection, and they will probably do a half arsed job of sound proofing the buildings, but that is a problem for future residents, which are not likely to include me.

Anyway this is about BELCONNEN MARKETS. You know that markety thingee in Belconnen.

That’s the thing I don’t get. It doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Belconnen Markets, aside from being built next to it, and possibly reducing the car parking there. Why is this being called a “$130 Markets Facelift” by the Canberra Times, when the DA is all about a new building? Does putting something big, new and shiny next to the markets now constitute a facelift? Sure, complaining about reduced parking may be a legitimate gripe for the retailers, but to be somehow linking the maintenance of the markets buildings to this new development seems a bit of a stretch.

We may be in need of more accomodation options but the ‘multi storied units’ option seems to be very well subscribed to me. Oversubscribed in some cases.

If we are gong to talk accomodation options how about some houses? You listening John boy? Even small blocks in the ‘burbs is better than – generally – poor built boxes in this type of development!! Oh and some infrastructure to go with it as well.

Anyway this is about BELCONNEN MARKETS. You know that markety thingee in Belconnen.

So not so much a market but a yet another block of units – Lord knows Belconnen needs more of them – more offices and a carpark. Oh and a few places selling stuff.

And your point is? At a time when Canberra is crying out for additional accomodation options should we be complaining when someone proposes to build them near to other amenities like the belconnen markets?

The grey bulding above in the illustration is already a hotel & the markets themselves are in the top left of the picture.. The proposal is hardly suggesting they be built on top of the existing markets.

Residential units with lovely views to Bunnings, the Shell servo and the Police holding yard.

Come on.. how is that better or worse than many other unit developments around canberra? The lack of beach front views will probably affect the price that the finished units get but having stayed in places where the view is of a neighbouring building’s brick wall I reckon these wont be as bad.

Not too mention delivery trucks thru the night from thrus onwards. Sounds like a great place for an agry insomniac.
