The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in any home. It is a hub of activity and focal point for the rest of the house or apartment.

Whether you’re looking to maximise your space for storage, invest in state-of-the-art appliances, or give it a more modern look, renovating your kitchen can be one of the best improvements to your home. It can also add value that may make it more competitive should you wish to enter it into the Canberra property market.

A lot goes into renovating a kitchen, from coming up with a functional design to installing the hardware. Rather than trying to do it on your own, consider hiring a professional service to help you throughout the process.

Given how important the room is in our daily lives, trying to choose a good and trustworthy kitchen renovation company in Canberra might seem daunting. In this article, we’ll outline the most important factors to consider when looking for a kitchen renovator, and give you a list of some of Canberra’s best services.

What makes a great kitchen renovation company?

How do you actually pick the good guys from the bad? Keep an eye out for the following must-have traits of the best kitchen renovation companies:

  • Eye for detail. The best kitchen renovation companies don’t cut corners. Instead, they pay attention to every last detail. You don’t want to be left with an uneven surface or a leaky tap!
  • Skills and experience. When renovating your kitchen, you want the hard work completed by skilled professionals who have extensive experience working on all kinds of kitchens. Check out the kitchen renovation company’s portfolio to see what previous work it has done and whether it meets your expectations.
  • Reliable and efficient. Having your kitchen redone can be disruptive. The best kitchen renovation companies in Canberra can work around your needs. Make sure your deadline is clearly communicated and the timeline is being met.
  • Effective communication. Sometimes, timelines don’t go to plan. The best kitchen renovation companies will always communicate any delays or issues effectively. In addition, they might advise against your original design plans for functionality issues and the like. If they are not afraid to give you sound advice with good reason, then you can be sure they are effective communicators.
  • Well priced. Kitchens aren’t cheap, and more often than not, you get what you pay for. That said, you shouldn’t have to choose a kitchen renovation company that charges an arm and a leg. Shop around to see how different companies compare to find the one that works within your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I hire a kitchen renovation company?

While it is possible to make small adjustments to your kitchen yourself, these changes will be superficial. You might be able to replace the taps on your sink, but this won't have much of an effect on your kitchen's water efficiency; you could give the walls a fresh coat of paint, but unless you can adjust the ventilation in your kitchen the walls will still be affected by smoke and steam. Hiring a professional for a full renovation allows you to make fundamental changes that will improve how your kitchen works and, in the long run, make your life much easier.

Why should I remodel my kitchen?

Your kitchen might need remodelling if you are finding it a difficult space to work in. Do you have enough storage space? Do your appliances work properly? Is it a nice room to be in, aesthetically? If it is causing you headaches of any kind, consider talking to a renovation company about design plans to see how you can make your kitchen an enjoyable place to be in.

How can I modernise my kitchen?

To achieve a modern-looking kitchen, keep an eye out for the current trends - such as open shelving, white-stone countertops, under-cabinet lighting, or lots of natural light.

You could also modernise your kitchen with appliances that are newer and more environmentally friendly. These changes will not only save you money but also keep your home green.

How much does the average Canberra kitchen renovation cost?

This is a difficult question to answer. First, consider the construction of your home. A brick veneer house with timber flooring will be cheaper to renovate than full brick walls with concrete on ground.

Next, ask yourself what kind of renovation you're doing. Will you be making changes to the layout, walls or doors? What level of quality (and expense) will your materials, appliances and additions be? Will your renovator professionally manage the entire project? Is there silica or asbestos in the home, and are plumbing approvals required?

While there's no truly comprehensive answer, a good starting point for your budget is $50K to $75K plus appliances for the average kitchen.

And remember - you get what you pay for!

Will renovating my kitchen add value to my home?

Many prospective buyers and renters don't want to move into a home that needs work, so a recently renovated kitchen is far more appealing to the wider market. Having an updated, functional, modern and aesthetically pleasing kitchen will allow you to market your home for a higher price than you might have been able to with an out-of-date kitchen, and eventually pay for the work you had done on it.

I’m looking for a kitchen company/cabinet maker that can remove the cupboard above a fridge and shorten it so I can fit a taller fridge in. Does anyone know someone who is willing to take on a small job like this?

Felix the Cat10:06 am 27 May 24

My experience after having a flood damaged kitchen is most kitchen companies aren’t interested in small jobs like this, they only want to rip the whole kitchen out and replace it.

Keven Wilson3:41 pm 02 May 20

I’m looking for genuine recommendations on a good kitchen company in Canberra to renovate my kitchen. Please be honest, and I’m not interested in self recommendation, or from friends and family of the companies. Previous comments on this site are old and won’t be of any value today.

I am curious how S and M made this list? I cannot find a positive review anywhere. I also note that all of the images on their website are stolen from other businesses; that sends alarm bells off by itself. Regardless, I have dealt with this one man rock show and I would not recommend to anyone.

Which one man rock show are you talking about? There are several kitchen companies mentioned above. Do you know anything about Rossetti Yau at Hall?

Hi Lilminx,

Quite interesting,i was looking into the awards by HIA for under $ 20,000 renovation and bumped into – http://www.rbsaust.com.au

I realise that this is an older post but I wanted to relay my experiences for anyone who is still looking for kitchen renovation recommendations.
I recently had a complete kitchen renovation. After “shopping” around, I decided to go with a smaller company as I felt that with the larger companies I was just an “address” not a real person who had ideas of my own. I went with Brad from Purr-fect Kitchens 0409986436. Brad provided me with a free quote as well as giving me some good design ideas to visually maximise my kitchen and also improve its serviceability. From some photos cut from magazines, etc. he was able to incorporate my ideas into a beautiful kitchen with made to measure cabinets, some glass, stone bench tops and glass splash backs. His quality to detail is exceptional, good time frame and good price, though I will state he is not the cheapest.
I could not be happier with the end result and highly recommend him for any kitchen and cabinetry needs including laundry renovations and wardrobe installations.

We just had our new kitchen designed an installed by S&M Joinery / Kitchens in Queanbeyan. The team was fantastic and took care of everythign from start to finish all we had to do was decide on colours and approve the layout. The project manager was always reachable and although they weren’t the cheapest they did provide a lot of inclusions and extra work that others quoted around $2500 on top of the project price and even offer a lifetime guarantee on all their work. We are very happy with the final result and the excellent custom service. You can check them out at: http://www.smjoinery.com.au

We have just had our new kitchen built and put in. We had no idea who to see about getting it done but after reading the posts on this website, we tried Crown Kitchens in Queanbeyan.

Paco came to our house and had suggested that we keep the shape of our current kitchen but re-arrange a few things in order to maximise space. We enjoyed our visit to his workshop in Queanbeyan because he and his wife Isabel gave us a tour of the projects that they were currently working on. They answered our numerous questions and went through some of the key options using demonstration kitchens in their showroom. After our visit, we didn’t feel the need to see anyone else for a quote.

They were able to fit us in even earlier than they had originally planned (which meant that it would all be done by Christmas!). It was all so smooth because they coordinate the plumber, electrician, plasterer, glass splashback people and the benchtop people. Each day we would get a call or email from one of these people who would introduce themselves to us and work out an appropriate time to come and do the work. Isabel would also call and touch base to check how we were going with the different trades. I was really impressed with the communication and quality of work carried out by all of the different trades that they coordinated. Since all of these trades people regularly carry out work for Crown Kitchens, they knew each stage and what it involved in detail and they would contact each other if they had a question or to work out timing etc. When Paco junior came to do the install, nothing was a hassle for him and his team and if we wanted something adjusted etc, he was keen to help out. He also does great computer schematics of the design – something which the electrician found invaluable when roughing in for cables etc.

Crown Kitchens are a family business and appear to really support young trades people in the area by engaging their services. We are thrilled with the service that we received from Crown Kitchens and would encourage you to get in touch with them if you are thinking of having a kitchen renovation.

After doing some research we had our kitchen made by Touchstone Joinery in Queanbeyan – nothing a problem, affordable and they did a great job. (02) 6232 9255 – 3 / 38 Yass Rd.

Bathrooms by ADN Builders (0417 424 408). Fantastic – very, very happy with these guys. They also tiled front and back verandahs – and recommended a guy to do my front railing after I couldn’t find anyone with a reasonable quote.

Good luck 🙂

Modern touch 0406144207, did 2 bathrooms for me and just did a major kitchen/bathroom/renovation for a friend. Top quality work, professional trades, good price and great to deal with. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Avoid kitchen connection etc you’ll pay a lot extra for their marketing.

Kitchens Direct have just finished our kitchen and bathroom. (Note: NOT Kitchen Connections of the bum wrap 26 May below). We’re very happy with all the work. Peter did the builiding and co-ordinated the tradies (tiling, splashback, plaster, plumber, we painted). They were all excellent: reliable, good work, punctual & timely, nearly all cleaned up after themselves and kept us informed. Highly recommended.

kitchensdirect@velocitynet.com.au

I just got part of my kitchen renovated. I thoroughly recommend Steve from Kitchen Kapers. The cabinets were all built exactly to how I wanted them and he was very reasonably priced. He finished the job in 2 days.
Address: 102 Gladstone Street, Fyshwick ACT 2609
Phone: 0419 295 023

Like the OP, not many kitchen companies were interested in the work that I wanted to get done, most of the companies I contacted (Simplicity, Benchmarc, Image etc) only did complete removal and installation of a new kitchen not a partial renovation.

From the recommendations here, we went to see Simplicity Kitchens and explained we wanted to re-do half our kitchen, he spent ages telling us what they could do and we organised a time for them to come and give us a quote.

Wasted our time and his, so annoying.

We used Mark Foley (he has a facebook page with pics) to do our kitchen last year after getting 4 quotes. He was $3K cheaper than the other quotes, made everything to measure here in Canberra and project managed the plumbers, electricians and plasterers.

I second the recommendation for Mark Foley. Maybe you should be calling him now that Simplicity didn’t work out.

From the recommendations here, we went to see Simplicity Kitchens and explained we wanted to re-do half our kitchen, he spent ages telling us what they could do and we organised a time for them to come and give us a quote.

Arrived to give us a quote (dashed home from work in time to be there), sat his rather large bum on my kitchen bench and said “nah, we only do rip out and replace”.

Wasted our time and his, so annoying.

Do not go with Kitchen Connection!! We got a bit sucked in as they offered finance, and initially everything was fine, good service, kitchen delivered on time etc. It was the tradies they used that were the problem, the guy who installed the kitchen was a complete A-hole to deal with. We were advised we would be able to chat with him at installation time about the placement of the island bench etc and he couldn’t care less, actually walked away from us while we were asking him a question and was really rude the whole time. He didn’t bring one of the power points we had marked through and when we called to get this fixed the response was “well the cupboard’s in the way now i don’t know where it is, you’ll have to do it”. He didn’t install the rangehood correctly (we had to get the manufacturer out to fix it) and the plumber broke tiles on the roof instead of cutting them for the rangehood ducting, plumber also didn’t finish the work on the drain under the house. It took 3 calls to get this fixed. We were also promised a $200 Myer voucher on completion of our kitchen. It was installed in March and we are still waiting for the voucher, I have emailed them no less that 5 times about this and all I get is a response that they have forwarded my request onto head office.

The ownership with regards to fixing problems has been terrible. The kitchen it’s self is fine, no issues with quality etc, but it certainly cost more than it would have with a smaller outfit (but we couldn’t afford to pay for it outright) and the service has been some of the worst I’ve encountered!

HI Rioters,

How about Ray Browne in Mitchell?

Benchmark kitchens in Mitchell

I would definitely go a speak to crown kitchens and joinery as you can see from this other post here.

http://the-riotact.com/kitchen-renovations-in-the-inner-north/39113

Have had 2 kitchens, 3 bathroom vanities and many other joinery projects completed with them such as entertainment units and laundry cupboards.
Could not be happier with how easy they are to deal with, quality of the workmanship, price and design ideas they come up with to make better use of all available space.

They are always a pleasure to deal with and no job is too big or small for them.
Highly recommend at least going in and meeting Paco and getting a quote from him and as from the post link above I am not the only one.

can check out their website at http://www.crownkitchensandjoinery.com

Oh, forgot to mention, that John from Purr-fect Bathrooms 0409 986436 also works on kitchens, carpentry, any plumbing and electrical work, general maintenance as well ad removal and installations of windows and doors. He has a wealth of knowledge. Not the cheapest around, but you will never be disappointed.

We used John from Purr-fect Bathrooms, and he certainly lived up to his name. The transformation to our house after John renovated our bathroom, toilet, ensuite, laundry and outside deck is beautiful and really much more than we had hoped for. John loves his job and really respected our needs. He listened to our requirements and offered his honest and professional opinion and advice. John and his team of professional tradesmen were very prompt, efficient and very friendly completing the job within the stipulated time frame (usually 2 weeks). He used only quality products and gave us a fixed price. We did ask for some variations to our existing quote and John was only too happy to work with us, discussed our wishes and incorporated these into the work after discussing the extra costs involved beforehand. He was recommended to us via some friends whom he had previously done some work for and I can not recommend him highly enough. He is an incredible man with over 30 yrs experience in the building industry, so no issue too great. I am sure that he would not mind me giving you his number which is 0409 986436

Water tight constructions – Ben Janes 0415 203 511. Ben normally does bathroom renovations but also does kitchens.

+1 for Simplicity kitchens. They did a great job on my kitchen with almost no fuss or problems.

Dave from Simplicity Kitchens. He designs and builds in Canberra, and nothing was too much trouble. When we had problems with tradies that we thought were organised, Dave rang around and got his blokes over the next day. His workshop and display is in Mitchell, and he lives in Lanyon, so was happy to stop by on his way home from work to talk to us about what we wanted, etc. Certainly beats a couple of responses we got along the lines of “Oh, that’s too far away for me. You’re best finding someone else.”

HeighwayQueen12:26 pm 07 May 12

Depends if you want it all done for you or if you want to do it yourself.
We recently built our house and organized our own kitchen through United Auctions in Queanbeyan.

They offer a 1 hour free design session but you need to have all your measurements, window locations etc and then they will sit down with you and help you design it using some software so you can see how it will look.

If you choose standard sizes and colours etc you can get it withing a few weeks, if you want non standard stuff it has to be made in China and shipped over and can take ages. Mine too 15 weeks, mind you that was over Christmas and New Year.

My bench top wasn’t exactly right, I recieved a bullnose edge when I’d asked for straight edge but I put up with it as I wasn’t waiting another 15 weeks for a new one! I did demand some money back as compensation.

The other thing is that you have to pick it up and install it yourself, which worked for us but isn’t for everyone.

End result I have a huge kitchen, with soft close cupbaords and drawers with a granite bench and breakfast bar for just over $4000.

Knebel designed and project managed our new kitchen about 5 years ago. My only beef was that every trade was organised except the painter. It took ages to find someone to do the small but very fiddly patch job.

Knebel wasn’t the cheapest but it wasn’t the most expensive either. We remain happy with the results.

We used Mark Foley (he has a facebook page with pics) to do our kitchen last year after getting 4 quotes. He was $3K cheaper than the other quotes, made everything to measure here in Canberra and project managed the plumbers, electricians and plasterers.

We paid just over $8K plus appliances for a pretty basic fit out (no stone benchtops). They were in and out in 3 days and did an awesome job – absolutely nothing went wrong and nothing has fallen apart or needed repair.

Hi
I know this is an old post but I am curious to know more about your experiences. While Mark seems competant I found him hard to deal with and very disorganise/disinterested and this is before we even started. However, the biggest issue was the demand for 50% desposit upfront; close to 20k and this is before detailed design and final measure. I just could not justify that.

I’d be interested in hearing people’s recommendations, etc too as we’re looking at replacing parts or and extending our existing kitchen.
