From making sure we look our best for the day ahead to unwinding in the evening with a relaxing bath, most people spend a considerable amount of time in the bathroom. In fact, the average person will spend 416 days in the bathroom over their lifetime. Given the high number of hours, it’s easy to see why bathrooms are a popular renovation choice.
Besides the fact that having a functional and aesthetically pleasing bathroom will make your life a lot easier; a modern and up-to-date bathroom can add significant value to your home in the future.
If you’re considering a bathroom renovation, it can be difficult to know where to start. The best bathroom renovators will be able to advise you on design, timeline, cost, the demands of the Canberra property market (if you’re eventually looking to sell or lease your home), and other useful information that you wouldn’t be able to get on your own.
So, what specific qualities should you look for in a bathroom renovation company, and how can you find the best?
What makes a great bathroom renovation company?
Not sure what you are looking for in a bathroom renovation company? Not to worry. Keep the following characteristics in mind.
- Extensive portfolio. Ask to view a company’s portfolio of bathroom renovations before you engage their services. That way, you can determine if they have the skills to deliver the bathroom of your dreams.
- Experience. Not all building companies specialise in bathroom renovations. Look for a company that has extensive experience renovating bathrooms, which can be more complex than other types of renovations. Bathrooms need to look great but also be waterproof, compliant and functional.
- Transparent pricing. Your bathroom renovation company should be upfront with you about how much things will cost. Quotes and invoices should be transparent, with no unexpected additional fees or charges. If unexpected costs or extras do happen to arise, the best companies will always consult you before engaging these costs.
- Reliable and respectful. From tilers to plumbers, look for a company with tradespeople that arrive on time and ready to work. The best treat customers’ homes like their own – keeping mess and disruption to a minimum, while being careful with your belongings.

The new design is outstanding due to Mark’s creative design and everything was done to the highest quality for decent price. When Mark found the floor had a big hole in it – he replaced [it] without any extra charge to maintain the integrity of his original quote (that was worth $3000)… Mark did such a good job that l would recommend him 100 percent as he does things to the highest standard.”

Mark Sheppard B & R have just completed our combined bathroom/toilet/laundry renovation, which included re-doing the floor to create a wet room, installing under-floor heating, half removing an internal brick wall to create a large, bright and spacious bathroom (previously dark and dingy), new floor and wall tiles plus painted brick, and installation of all new items included lighting and electrics and a very modern sliding frosted glass door. Very happy with the final result, the workmanship from all was excellent and can’t be faulted, and the team is very well coordinated. Would highly recommend.
We had the Mark Sheppard team complete a bathroom, toilet and laundry renovation after water damage led to a sinking floor causing extensive damage.
Mark Sheppard uses a project manager app. This was an extremely helpful tool which let us know what was coming up, any issues that occurred and photo updates on the project. If anything required attention, it was uploaded to the app instantly which led to minimal delays in communication.
The team working on the our renovation were punctual, caring and completed the works before the quoted 8 week due date. The finish on our reno was one of absolute quality. Styling assistance and computer generated design work was done by Angela who took the time to know our style and assisted us in a achieving our vision. Angela also went shopping with us and was flexible with timing which we really appreciated.
Chris, the project manager, was impressive throughout. From the start Chris took the upmost care of our property laying matting to protect our hardwood floors and boarded the walls to protect them also. He was always available to advise us on issues, had a great repour with his tradies and in the final stages of the reno his quality assurance and sign off on the completed works was to a very high standard.
Gill was incredibly understanding when it came to admin and accounts. Being that this was an insurance job Mark Sheppard were lenient and patient with us and the insurance company throughout.
Mark Sheppard Bathrooms and Renovations provided a quality product, a professional team to carry out the works and a modern application to keep track of the project. In 2021 we have engaged Mark Sheppard to renovate our kitchen. Can’t wait ?
Mark Sheppard agreed on 9 April 2020 that he would repair our hail-damaged skylights. We acknowledged that there was a lot of jobs needing doing in Canberra, so we were careful to not make a nuisance of ourselves in asking when the work would be done, but after making a couple of follow-up calls, and receiving no firm date, and after our insurance company asked if the six tunnels in our roof had yet been fixed, Mark finally sent a sub-contractor round in late June to look at the job. We were assured things would be fixed in “two to four weeks”. We were told this on several occasions, but nothing ever eventuated, and only was it in early August did we start with weekly calls to find out where things were at — each time there was some excuse for the delay (sub-contractors, weather, covid, lack of materials, etc.). Towards the end of August, Mark started ignoring our now-twice-weekly calls. On 31 August Mark answered one of our calls (we never once received a courtesy call from Mark to provide an update on the job), at which we pinned him down to ask if the work was going to be done at all. Mark again made a vague promise of “four to six weeks”. This provided no guarantee, so we have now decided to find a contractor who will follow-through on the promises made to complete the work, but it has left us with a compromised roof for over eight months, and now we are almost five months behind schedule in getting things fixed. If we had been told the situation from the very start, we would not have gone with Mark Sheppard. If Mark Sheppard agrees to any building work other than bathrooms, you should think twice.
Hi Megan
Thank you for your feedback, we take all reviews very seriously and are sorry to hear you were not satisfied. The hail storm in January has left many Canberran’s with extensive delays in repairs. During the initial stages of Covid 19 we took on insurance work to keep our teams employed. Some of the specialised items such as skylights were on backorder for months both due to the excessive demand caused by the hail storm and shipping delays due to Covid 19. We quoted your Skylights on the 9th of April and you contacted us in May to proceed. At the time you advised you wished to go ahead I advised that there was considerable delays in materials. Complicating the delays in installation, as I explained several times, the insurance company we were contracted to had redirected us onto work they deemed more urgent and this kept filling up the schedule our insurance team. We appreciate how understanding you were and how upset and let down you feel. I must note that your roof was not compromised as it was properly sealed by the insurance company. Kind regards,
Mark Sheppard
We used Mark Sheppard from Feb to Jun 2019 for a remodel of our en-suite. Overall quality is great, support in selecting PC items was good and finish is first class. We did experience extensive delays with our vanity top, they ordered the wrong one initially. At that stage work slowed and communication was poor, leaving us with a semi finished en suite for six weeks. The final vanity top installed didn’t match our sample, which caused some grief. If you’re installing manufactured stone, make the effort and select your full piece yourself, don’t rely on samples or simply get your builder to order based on your sample. Variation should be minimal in manufactured stone but in reality it isn’t and the builder should advise of that beforehand.
I recently had Oliver Aldric -Salt Renovation renovate my kitchen.
I was particularly impressed with Oliver’s attention to detail.
The price was more than competitive, the finished product looks amazing
Any minor defects were carefully attended to by his staff and I really appreciate it
Thanks again!

Hi Maree
It was a pleasure working for you. Your bathroom is beautiful. We are glad you were delighted in the result. It certainly was a dramatic transformation. We have a blog on your renovation https://www.bathroomsandrenovations.com.au/2018/08/18/modern-australian-melba. All the best to your family.

We were recommended Oli from Salt Renovations http://www.saltrenovations.com.au by the good guys down at the Bathroom Warehouse. We figured they’d see a lot of tradies and reno jobs, so we met up with Oli up and had a chat. We really liked that Oli ‘got’ exactly what my wife and I wanted without trying to ‘upsell’ or over capitalise. We also really appreciated Oli’s recommendations on what might work better or how to get more from our budget. Long story short, we used Oli for our bathroom and ensuite renovations. We liked their work so much we got Salt Renovations back a few months later to do our kitchen. They’ve got photos of their work on the website too: https://www.saltrenovations.com.au/portfolio
I found Mark Sheppard through a review on this site and chose him to renovate my ensuite. When Mark came over to look at my bathroom, he was really genuine and it was clear that he was out to make an honest living, rather than charging through the nose. Mark’s quote was comparitable with other companies but I felt like it was better value for money because he included so many little extras to ensure that I ended up with a quality bathroom. Mark and his team were prompt , polite, informative and friendly, which is important when you’re greeting tradies first thing in the morning. I am delighted with my new modern and sophisticated ensuite. I would definitely recommend Mark to anyone interested in bathroom renovations. His number is ?0405 386 594?
I can thoroughly recommend Mark Sheppard, his mobile is 0405386594 and website is http://www.bathroomsandrenovations.com.au. He provided wonderful service when the ensuite of our investment unit needed a replacement shower screen, extra towel rails, hooks and a tallboy cupboard. Not a big job but an urgent one at Christmas, the busiest time of year. We live in Adelaide and Mark’s name was one of 3 recommendations sent by email following a plea to the very helpful staff at Reece Bathroomlife at Fyshwick (ask for Mitchell or Jayde). A phone call later and Mark agreed to meet us at the unit in just 3 days’ time! He assured us he could organise the removal of the old shower screen, custom manufacture and install a new shower screen, along with extra rails/hooks and the tallboy. It would be a 3 week wait for the shower screen and the job would take a half days work. The items needed were ordered, Mark took care of accepting delivery of everything at his address and we went back to Adelaide confident we’d made the right decision. The shower screen was ready at the promised 3 weeks and Mark arranged a date for installation that gave me time to book airfares back to Canberra. True to his word the job was done between 9am and 12noon. Mark is a tradesman that is honest, reliable and provides quality service and I cannot recommend him enough.

We were very happy with the work and aftercare provided by Simon Gunn (http://www.gunnbuilding.com.au/)
I recently had my bathroom done and the toilet replaced in my ensuite. Mark Sheppard did the work and I can’t praise his work or his approach highly enough. Very professional and polite; always on time; comes shopping with you so that you get the right items that fit your plumbing etc. His phone number is 0405 386 594.
I got a recommendation from the RiotACT two years ago. John from Purr-fect Bathrooms was a pleasure to work with. We replaced our 1996 large ensuite. He briefed us well and sent us to his preferred bathrooms supplier – we think we got a really good deal. He turns up on time, cleans up, and he and his team were a pleasure to have around for the short time it took them to install. A few months after completion, we discovered a slow leak which we thought had something to do with the renovation. John came over that day, did in inspection, explained the problem – which was not his work, and offered to come back a few weeks later to repair the hole in the wardrobe. He was shortlisted because he likes cats, but it wasn’t the final reason we selected him!
