The Canberra Raiders have announced that Mal Meninga is coming back to the club in an official capacity:

Meninga will be a club ambassador with a diverse role ranging from assisting the coaching staff coaching, enhancing recruitment programs and aiding administration in the commercial division.

“Club ambassador; it’s a lovely title isn’t it. I’m very pleased to be back involved with the club. It’s more a consultancy role across the whole spectrum of the club as opposed to being involved in a specific area of the business.”

“I’m glad to be a sounding board for Dave [Furner] and the coaching staff and to be able to be of assistance to the players.”

“Recruitment is an important element too. I’m a Queenslander that came down to Canberra looking for an opportunity. There’s a lot of stigma about Canberra because it’s cold and all that sort or rubbish and hopefully I can allay all that. I played my entire NRL career here and I think it’s a fabulous place to play rugby league at. Through my own personal experience I can recommend to the players that it’s going to be a really good experience coming here.”

Ha! Saw Mal and a bunch of Raiders officials enjoying a long lunch in a Swinger Hill restaurant just before Christmas. My dining companion remarked how nice it was that Mal hadn’t forgotten the old team, and came all the way here for a Christmas lunch. Looks like the airfare might have been on the Raiders’ tab :).

He looks pretty fit, BTW, and according to my Brisbane sources is a substantial player in the fruit and vegie markets up there. Lives in a nice little mansion overlooking the river (high up!).

He may not be much of a politician, but seems to have a bit more financial nous than some of his ex footie star contemporaries.

Unless Mal himself announces it live on radio, it’s just doesn’t have the same pizzazz.

On account of the fact he’d have to unannounce it moments later, the Raiders have banned him from radio interviews until he is well settled into his new role.

Unless Mal himself announces it live on radio, it’s just doesn’t have the same pizzazz.

Is he being sponsored by Actew?

This situation reminds me of The Simpsons episode where Homer decides the best way out of a hole is to dig their way out. “Dig UP, stupid!”
