In coming months there will be major intersection closures due to the light rail project.

Closures of major intersections along Northbourne Avenue due to stage one of the light rail project are ramping up, with a partial closure of the Barton Highway and Northbourne Avenue intersection starting from 10 pm tonight and a range of other intersection closures to occur in coming months.

Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) report that a number of major intersections between Alinga Street and Flemington Road will be affected by periods of closures between October 2017 and December 2017.

The intersections to be affected include:

  • Alinga Street/Northbourne Avenue
  • Barry Drive/Cooyong Street/Northbourne Avenue
  • Macarthur Avenue/Wakefield Avenue/Northbourne Avenue
  • Mouat Street/Antill Street/Northbourne Avenue
  • Barton Highway/Northbourne Avenue

An intersection between Flemington Road and the Federal Highway will also be affected.

The partial closure of the Barton Highway and Northbourne Avenue intersection will occur from 10 pm tonight (October 27) until 10 pm on Sunday, October 29.

Traffic will not be able to turn right into Northbourne Avenue from the Barton Highway, and traffic travelling southbound on the Federal Highway will not be able to turn right into the Barton Highway.

Following the full re-opening of this intersection, northbound lanes on Northbourne Avenue between Mouat Street and the Barton Highway will then be fully closed for night works from Sunday, October 29 until Thursday, November 2.

These night works will begin at 8 pm until 6 am, except for on Sunday, October 29 when they will start at 10 pm.

During the closures, detours will be in place to divert road traffic including buses. The TCCS state that highly visible traffic management will be in place throughout the works. They are encouraging road users to observe traffic management signs and personnel.

These intersection closures will allow for the installation of underground services and works associated with the laying of the concrete track slab.

Affected residents and local businesses have been notified and TCCS state that they are working hard to ensure the intersection closures cause as little disruption as possible.

I guess it’s human nature but when one is compelled to avoid these disruptions in the name of progress and find other ways around them (and all the businesses offering services near them) it becomes habit forming so that when things return to “normal” one finds no reason to go back there.

That’s a vaguely positive comment about the project. Good to see you are finally coming around.
