Cracked Actor and The Monotremes at The Front

Last night two of Canberra’s newer bands graced The Front in Lyneham.

Cracked Actor:

Featuring familiar faces playing unfamiliar instruments (Nick Delatovic on Bass, Spike Thompson on drums) Cracked Actor sound like what would happen if Radiohead shared a candle lit dinner with Fleet Foxes.

There’s a slightly folky tone, but the laptop’s up on stage and they spend a lot of time exploring soundscapes.

The Monotremes:

Now this is a lineup one doesn’t see too often. Two keyboards, bass, drums, and a bassoon. Yes that’s right, a Bassoon.

The two keyboard players use distinctive and unusual vocal harmonies and the song writing is sharp and clever, even if they do seem to jump into a keyboard solo when they’re feeling lost.

It’s a sort of a beatnik jazz vibe.

While neither band is going to feature in the top 40 any time soon they’re both well worth grooving along to.
