Simon Corbell has announced he’s going to add the right to education to the Human Rights Act:
Mr Corbell said that the right to education was an important inclusion to protect some of the most vulnerable in our community.
“Children are some of the most precious but vulnerable members of the ACT community, and it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that children are afforded the best start to life in receiving a comprehensive education to set them up for a successful life,” Mr Corbell said.
“Under this new right, the ACT Government will continue to provide free, high quality, primary school education to all children, as well as continuing to provide high quality education options for all people living in the Territory.”
“The effect of including this right in the Human Rights Act is that the government has an immediate obligation to satisfy the elements of availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of education.
Would this be the same sort of obligation that we have with housing?
