Food safety breachers to be named

By johnboy 18 February 2011 6

The Canberra Times is declaring victory after Katy Gallagher folded on the issue of the public naming of food service businesses found to be in breach of health and safety rules:

Health Minister Katy Gallagher yesterday said she had instructed her department to draft amendments which would enable the names of offending businesses to be published.

”I have had representations from the community that they have a very strong desire to know where the restaurants are and I think we have to respond to that,” she said.

Ms Gallagher said she was concerned that the reputations of well-run food businesses could be damaged by rumours about which venues had breached food safety rules.

”I don’t want to see good restaurants punished because we don’t have a system in place,” she said.

The amendment is almost certain to pass the Assembly after the Greens expressed strong in-principle support yesterday.

So there we go.

Typical ACT let’s not offend anyone approach. If a clear breach of health standards is found or if poisoning/illness can be linked to an ACT establishment, let it be known I say! NSW has a system in place (though the list of offending establishments is far to large for you to be able to scroll through before you go out for a meal) and Singapore has a simple A, B, or C lettering system that is displayed outside restaurants.

Good move, and about time.

Will these notifications be on an act.gov.au website, or of the “Lets offer some cash only to the Canberra Times to publish a public announcement” variety?

Wonder how many of johnboy’s $10 lunch places will be on the list?
