A line of thunderstorms stretching from Parkes to the Victorian border will impact the ACT and surrounding regions during the next several hours, which has prompted the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) to issue a severe thunderstorm warning.

The line of storms is likely to produce damaging winds in the warning area in locations including Canberra, Yass, Parkes, Young, Gundagai and Tumut.

Damaging winds and isolated thunderstorms are expected to impact the South West Slopes, ACT and parts of Southern Tablelands, Central West Slopes and Plains and Snowy Mountains forecast districts.

“A line of thunderstorms has formed about the inland and is tracking east,” the Bureau’s warning says.

The Bureau issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 4:30 pm, warning people to move their cars under cover or away from trees.

People should also secure or put away loose items around their house, yard and balcony, and stay indoors away from windows.

The Bureau also advised that a more detailed severe thunderstorm warning will be issued to people in Canberra and Queanbeyan if severe thunderstorms develop in those areas.

The warning comes as temperatures in the region begin to plummet from a complex frontal and low-pressure system moving across Victoria, Tasmania and southern NSW.

Some of Canberra’s southern suburbs and the Brindabella Ranges will be in the eye of a powerful blast of polar air expected to bring snow flurries on Wednesday and Thursday (9 and 10 June).

I must have gone to sleep because I missed this. Lot’s on blue sky outside now.
