I wonder how many more office buildings Snow wants to construct in and around the airport? Surely enough already!

I’m sure there’s still room for a casino, fairground and the 40 000 seat convention centre.

Anyway, he’ll probably keep building until there’s a fatal air accident involving a light aircraft and building-induced windshear!

One of the reasons to dislike the Canberra Airport’s Snow family is that their infamous and high-handed plan for the centre of Canberra involved turning Anzac Parade into a commuter road, and trashing the Hellenic Memorial. Needless to say, they had gone to a UK company that didn’t even bother to visit Canberra and find out what was important to keep. So Canberra Airport is on the nose by dint of simply belonging to the Snowtowners.

I’m pretty sure even the Snows couldnt turn ANZAC parade into a commuter road, given that it goes from nowhere useful to nowhere useful (talking just of commuter use here). I think you will find it was Constitution Avenue, which at the time was being discussed quite widely as a road that should be upgraded and changed, with lots more retail and residential (which I gather is the original Griffin plan).

However, the development of Civic west has probably put paid to the need to upgrade Consitution Ave at the moment. Nonetheless, Consitution Avenue is currently a bit of a nothing road that needs a bit of thought. I dont know about the Hellenic Memorial, but memorials can be moved without detracting from the value of the memorial.

well, ‘enough’ given the current access to them etc – but improved access, transport and such, and amenity would make this spot a good location for business and i see no reason why growth should stop. build, and they will come. if the airport wants to become a hub, it will need accommodation and service for this, and businesses geared to travel. be a nice spot for a high-speed rail station, too…

He’d keep building on every patch of ground given his druthers. However, he still has two big empty new buildings at Majura Park that are sitting empty… he has to pay people to spray the dust and spiders off them periodically, but there they sit, like the Marie Celeste.

I think some of the new ones near the end of the southern end of the runway are still mostly empty too. I imagine he’s thinking now about maybe accommodation… he has an airport hotel on the immediate plans, but perhaps a small suburb will go up next. There’s all that space around Fairbairn…

Have noticed that the Snows don’t seem to be popular with Riotactors (though why their sort of get up and go, free enterprise spirit would be unpopular with a Liberal Party supporter is a mystery), but I’m curious: when did they propose a plan for the centre of Canberra?

And turning Anzac Parade into a commuter road? Well isn’t it? What else is a six lane road for?

By the way, I have no involvement or contact with, or interest in the Snows or the airport — except that as an occasional air traveller I like what they’re doing with it.

Well there’s a whole swag of incorrect generalisations.

Not sure what the ‘swag’ of incorrect generalisations covers, but if you’re including the Liberal Party reference it was to ‘a [singular] Liberal Party’ supporter not to Riotactors generally.

EvanJames 9:17 am 27 Nov 12

The airport is constantly coming up with all kinds of plans for many bits of Canberra, which they helpfully have professionally drafted up before putting them to the government. They don’t let petty considerations like memorials, public amenity or peoples’ homes bother them, after all, this is PROGRESS.

The latest that I’m aware-of is their blocking the erection of quite a good bit of public art (which has already been purchased and is probably sitting in a shed somewhere) on one of the roads near the airport, as they’d just put up a similar bit of art and didn’t like the competition, although their justification was that they “had plans” for that bit of road. It’s not their bit of road, yet they “have plans” for it.

So much hate for Canberra Airport… again. Seems every thread on hear about the Airport or anything related to it brings out a truck load of sniping. What gives?

Perhaps you’d rather it returned to the era where it was a rusty, asbestos shed in a f-king paddock?

Childish.

Thank you for your contribution Mr Snow.

Heh. Pretty-much what I was thinking, another whiny airport stooge. I hope people never forget what they did to a hitherto-functional road, and stay suspicous about everything they continue to try to pull over us.

Mr Evil 11:02 pm 26 Nov 12

How about ‘Brand Depot Memorial Regional Airstrip and Parking Station’?

Is that you, CT’s John Thistleton.

How much is Snow paying you?

It should be re-named “Stanhope Interrelational Airport” as a tribute to the man and his reason for sharing his public art with us.

Yeah, but the art on display at the airport is actually interesting.

I figured John Stanhope would be a given.

There’s a precedent with other airports like JFK and Ronald Reagan named after famous world leaders. Surely John deserves one as well.

I agree.

Agree, good on Eva for showing initiative, however I do have to say that being reminded of black box voice recorders when I’m about to fly is not high on my list of things to think about.

Then again, being reminded of the safety technology which has gone into aviation since the wright brothers became the first people to get airborne without killing themselves is probably not a bad thing either.
