Does anyone know why Oporto’s shutdown in Civic and Woden?

Their website is still up

I have heard rumors but nothing has been confirmed.

Looks like i’m going to have to get my chicken Burgers from the Fish Shack from now on.

Protip: Oporto in Garema place to become a Zeffirelli express/takeaway store.

The Civic Oporto’s is back in business- picked up lunch there today.

Kingsley’s at Tuggeranong is renovating after all, the blank boards now have a message saying look out for a new look store.

Why has this important question taken so long to appear on RiotAct? Woden has been closed for weeks!

It closed suddenly on a Friday. Just a hand-printed note inside the glass and trays of breadrolls uncollected outside at lunchtime.

Suspect they lost a lot of business when Nando’s and Grill’d opened up almost next door.
Also, Woden was never open for breakfast, even when Oporto was running a breakfast promotion.

Seriously? Tuggers Kinglsey is really gone? It was still live and kicking when I was walking through there a couple of weeks ago.

I haz a sad.

Gone yesterday, no signs up saying it’s a reno and no renovation work visible. Just boarded up.
Who knows, but after their disputes over rent at their Canberra Centre and Lanyon stores, the former closing down for good and the latter spending 3 years closed before coming back, I wouldn’t find its closure surprising.

Every one of the food places in the hyper-D (the hyper D is the place to be) has closed recently and removed the ugly bit at the top of the front of store. kingsleys had yet to do that.

Oporto, Subway, Fancy Fillings and Ali Baba haven’t either. Kingsley’s was actually the first to go for a taller shop format when the renovate about a decade ago. For a long time it stuck out from the others.

Oporto, Nando’s, whoppers, McDonald’s

All equally terrible.

No one frequents the good old wog shop anymore?- Steve’s at Melba does a sublime burger with the lot.

The burgers from the Bungendore servo are the best in the southern hemisphere. Worth travelling for.

My new McD favourite is the Chicken and Cheese burger. It’s got Mayo, cheese and a piping hot chicken fillet on a decent bun all for $2. One for a brief snack or 2 for a quick light lunch on the run. Easy to eat with one hand cause it doesn’t fall apart and no salads to disappoint. Bargain.

quick light lunch on the run.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I love me some McDonald’s, almost entirely because of the Mighty Angus burger. Incidentally, has anyone else tried the new ‘Ultimate’ Angus burgers from Mickey D’s? I’ve had two “new and improved” mighty Angus’ and they were both disgusting, to the point of being inedible. They’ve put some new heinous seasoning into the beef patty and ruined the whole burger. At least, in my opinion. Does anyone else share my sentiment? I’m worried that I’m the only one who feels this way and that they’ll never bring back the originals.

Have they changed the bun as well. I tried one of the new lamb burgers and while the Ingredients seemed to be a good combination it had a bun that had the consistency of a cheap memory foam mattress. It resulted in a strange texture of the whole burger which kind of ruined it and I’m reasonably certain I’ve had an Angus Burger since with the same lifeless bun.

I agree the lamb burger buns are the most god awful, vomit inducing, taste bud torturing shit I`ve ever had. I would seriously rather suffer a bad case of the clap than subject my self to another of those things. Not sure if they`ve made it to the angus burgers. Chicken and cheese burgers on the other hand are simply delicious.

Kingsley’s Chicken at Tuggeranong has shut down and is boarded up too.

Ever since Oporto moved in around the corner (which is still open and typically has a lot of customers), Kingsley’s has looked quiet most days. Think it finally bit the dust, and I’m not sorry to see it go. Bad staff, crap food, even compared to its other locations.

I’m suprised by two things:
hungry jacks is still kicking and there is no golden Arches in the dome.
Is that a decision of the owners or McD?

Steve’s Melba takeaway is the bomb yo. Best chips in town IMO.

And the price of their homemade chicken salt hasn’t gone up since 1990!

Chips just aren’t chips without the chicken salt..Judging by the line every Friday night their pizzas are as famous as ever!

Nooooo… don’t tell me McDonalds have ruined the only genuinely good burger they have ever sold. I’ll have to go back to only visiting for Bacon & Egg McMuffins when hungover.

Between the burnt outside and the stodgy American ‘cheese’, those damn things were always inedible.
The only thing they’ve added now is parsley to the patties.

If you want a real burger, go for Grill’d.
Most fast food joints, you can barely stand it when they put too much sauce on because it tastes so tragic. At Grill’d, you you literally order a cup of the herb mayo over ice by itself to go with the burger… well, I could.

I swear I just got a tear in my eye reading this… loved the Mighty Angus, the thought that they’ve slaughtered it makes me sad. The knowledge that my non-gallbladder devoid body would likely reject a trial of the new one, despite my Pavlovian salivation at the thought, just adds insult to injury…

You buy money? How does that work? Or were you buying a packet of chimps, and dropped the ‘k’?

If I’m being obtuse here, I apologise.

I just visited majura park to buy some money, and could’ve sworn the Oporto near the door was open as usual. Might have to wander over again and look at it properly.

Damn, I loved their Bondi burgers.

Oporto tastes like a petroleum by-product – I can’t stand the crap.

That said, I am a huge fan of Whoppers and the good old Angry Angus, which is strange, because they most probably ARE petroleum by-product. I guess they just hide the taste better.

So Oporto’s has closed, and their slogan was ‘You just got to go, O’Porto’

Coincidence?

Couple of things I always find odd:

1. Oporto Belco will be deserted while the Maccas across the way is chocker. The Oporto tucker is reliably superior, same sort of $$, and there’s no waiting. Remarkable no. of people with unwavering Maccas habits.

2. Variation from one franchise to another. Oporto Belco are consistently good. We went to the Oporto Civic twice and they were dreadful both times (such that we subsequently referred to them as “Oborto”).

So, not surprised the Civic shop is gonski. The Woden shop seemed to be in the wrong place.

Easy answer. Mcs*** is a staple food for bogans.

Oportos Belconnen was still a going concern at least last Thursday.

And the imposter passes away… Long live Nando’s.

Where the service and the food is crap – and I can talk legitimately on Woden and Tuggers stores. Once turned up to Nandos in Woden and asked for chips and burger at about 12pm on a week day – was told that the chips would be about half an hour wait as they hadn’t even put them on yet – lunch time in a busy shopping area with many office workers about to teem out. They have also failed several times to listen to the order correctly.

We usually go to Grill’d as they seem to be prepared for customers and they cater well (probably too well) for kids.

Personally always thought Oporto was better than Nandos.

Civic and Woden have been purged from their locations map http://www.oporto.com.au/locations/map.aspx

A franchisee dispute?

Glen Takkenberg
Pirate Party ACT for Ginninderra

Probably because they went from serving great tasting chilli chicken burgers (particularly at the original stores in Sydney) to stale crappy tasting things.

The wonders of franchises and being bought out by bigger competition.

And the imposter passes away… Long live Nando’s.

No wonder never been busy when I have been past

Majura Park was closed yesterday morning.. Looks like they just gotta go
