The Canberra Raiders have announced the launch of their 2012 membership drive.

The 2012 Membership commercial is aimed at engaging fans of the Raiders from all eras and encourages members to stick with the next generation of stars as they aim to take the Raiders back to the top of the NRL.

Raiders half Josh McCrone said the team was looking to help return the club to the finals again in 2012 and said club history was an important part of what this year’s squad is all about.

“I think there’s a new era starting and hopefully we can start this season well, particularly with all the young blokes coming through it’s a similar situation to when all the past greats faced when they first come to the club,” McCrone said. “I used to come down from Temora and watch the Raiders play and see guys like Kenny Nagas and Laurie Daley so it’s great to see guys like that feature in the ad.”

As part of their weird Bigpond web infrastructure you’ll need to install Silverlight and we can’t embed it.

But for the curious, here it is.

I’m finding this 80s/90s Raiders nostalgia to be a bit much, to be honest. It seems desperate. The club is trapped by its past.

2011 was the nadir of 15 years of MOR footy. The golden years (87-94) were great but it is a bit of a stretch to imbue this team with the glory of the past. As 2604 says, there are many good players (potentially even great) players at the Raiders, they just need a decent coach.

Why not shop around for an established premiership coach (Bennett, Hasler, Bellamy or even Sheens) instead of continually blooding noob coaches at NRL level (Meninga, Elliott, Henry, Furner)? Talent is so evenly spread between teams these days. A great coach is what makes the difference.

Until the modern Raiders win the title (or have a decent stab at it) the images of past glories will continue to ring hollow. And I say that as Raiders fan.

They can try and put a fresh coat of paint on it, but the problem is that the house is in ruins. My membership will remain expired.

the only way they will be that good again is if they find a time machine and get those players back.

Overall, the amount of talent in the squad is probably as high as it has been since those golden days. In some positions (fullback, front row) it is arguably higher than it was back then.

The missing links are a coach like Tim Sheens and a top-flight hooker.

plus there is the glaring omission of bradley clyde…

I’m sure I saw snozz in the video?

Probably, I didn’t click-through. I was referring to the embedded pic in the story.

Apparently the infamous inspirational tugging was on the Ch10 internal highlights reel. Lovely.

I’m sure I saw snozz in the video?

“Raiders *tug* on nostalgia to *boost member* numbers” and no picture of Laurie Daley!?

Missed opportunity or too obvious for a high class publication like RA?
