Just been for a jaunt to the Curtin shops and noticed that the Bakery has a lovely new addition – a red notice from our friendly food authorities.

Why the anger?

Because they are enforcing obscure rules, informing businesses after the rules change, failing people in things they previously passed, in the case of some businesses they stayed half a day looking for problems when they didn’t find any in the time allotted, they fault restaurants on problems with the building.

I even heard of a business getting into trouble because a courier made a bad delivery.

Most disturbing, the rules are not being enforced uniformly.

Next problem, every kitchen hand who cuts some potatoes, every waitress who slices a cake or fruit, every grandma who makes sandwiches needs a food safety certificate, every waitress needs an RSA. They have to pay for the right to see if they are any good at a casual job or employers have to certify them before giving them a try.

I predict a tough battle for survival.

Because these people are risking my and my families health and well being. If they were being closed incorrectly/illegally we would be seeing a lot more noise from these businesses. So far we have only seen one (Kingsley’s) put up a bit of a stink and in that they didn’t actually deny anything. If it was my business and I felt I was being treated unfairly I would be A) taking legal action B) going to the relevant MLA C) Going to the media.

I’m not entirely sure why people (both customers and business owners) feel so righteously indignant about enforcement of food safety legislation.

Just because the infringements might seem minor, or “everyone’s doing it” doesn’t mean it’s okay, guys.

Reminds me a bit of the mentality of “Everyone speeds a little bit… it’s not like I was driving dangerously. I mean _I’m_ not going to crash”.

Because, it is power that those people don’t have, they are scared of what they don’t have, so are indignant about it.

They can’t change the regulations, so they whinge about the outcome.
