Residents object to building embassies on Yarralumla parkland

By Ruqi - 30 July 2012 7

A proposal to build embassies on Stirling Park and near the Old Canberra Brickworks in Yarralumla has been met with vocal objections from residents. This proposal was introduced after plans to build in Red Hill were dumped due to high land prices.

Local resident Peter McGhie says the parkland should be preserved.

“It is a piece of open space running down to the lake, it’s a major amenity for the people of Canberra,” he said.

“It’s used by walkers, by school groups, by orienteers right on the edge of the lake, it’s just a very valuable amenity for Canberra.”

What’s Your opinion?

Up near the brickworks would be a good place for a couple of new embassies, as long as they leave a corridor for dog walkers to get through heading south and around towards the dam.

Isn’t every embassy already built and operational in Canberra? What other new countries need the land?

Ah Nimby’s,

you’ve just got to hate them.

By “valuable amenity for Canberra” I assume he means “valuable for my amenity and house price”.

Actually I think Peter McGhie isn’t just being a nimby. According to google, he has actually been out there with neighbours eradicating weeds from the site. I can’t see ANY embassy dwellers doing that for the neighbourhood!

I don’t think you would get many objections from the Yarralumla residents to a proposal to get rid of the poor people and keep open space designated for embassies.

Surely though, there are some poor people in Yarralumla that could be taken to relocation camps?
