RiotACT blocked at some government departments

Very disappointed not being able to access the RiotACT today from work (at lunchtime!). Seems that the Betting on the NRL final ad, causes the site to be blocked by my department. Maybe the RiotACT should rethink its ad policy – are gambling sites appropriate? Any thoughts?

Unless you cross AndyC of course 😉

Most sites are not blocked in the ACT Government but some sites will throw up the yellow “you shouldn’t be looking at this site” page. That will put most people off, but you can continue past it without any issues and it is pretty unlikely that anyone will do anything about it.

Careful H1NG0 – never know who is watchin 🙂

But yes, that is one of the features I like about the ACTGov web filtering – the ability to ‘coach’ users, and leave it up to them to decide if they go to the site or back out. Of course this is based on the individual agancies policy decisions on what should and shouldn’t be allowed access…..

What will be blocked will depend on what level of filtering is used by your agency, InTACT do offer filtering software to agencies that is above what is standard.

Personally, I don’t use this site at work due to my views not necessarily being those of the Government I’m employed by. Saves problems later if anyone happened to review viewing history..

There appear to be a number of ads that DEEWR don’t like, but the site is OK.

I have on the other hand, been reliably informed that RiotACT allowing private-messaging would immediately put it on our departmental blocked list.

There are a few other scenarios too, but PM is the big one.

My crew’s personal favourite is the kung fu ad that advisies learning this enables you to protect your family etc etc.

Doesn’t block the site for me, but I get my department’s “oh noes ur lookin at illegal stuffs” page displayed in the tiny window where the ad would appear.

Sounds like the squirming of risk-averse pube managers… scared much?

… yeah, why whinge on your own time when you can do it on your work time 😉

it is all down to the content filter used by the dept or company. Mine lets it through, but the same app in a dept is far more prone to rejecting it. It is down to the acceptable use policy in the organisation.

RiotAct is always good for some lunchtime reading. I’d be lost if I had to rely on the Canberra Times website for some local news.

Do they block the news sites? The sports pages are usually covered in betting ads.

At our Dept our souls are saved by blocking the ads and replacing them with the coat of arms and a sentence saying this site is blocked because it contains whatever…

The RiotAct scoop on the Family Day media release was very useful, some of my management were hanging out for it – to plan next year.

Uhm, it’s a non-work related site…

entirely appropriate for a government employee to access riotact, nearly (though not quite) as much as the ABC news website or Crikey I would have thought ..
