The ABC brings word that the Legislative Assembly’s Justice and Community Safety Committee is going to inquire as to why the long ago officially opened prison in Hume remains empty of prisoners.

Chairwoman Vicki Dunne says the committee will be seeking documents from the Government.

She says the terms of reference will be wide ranging.

“They relate to the official opening that was held on the 11th of September and it looks at things that may have contributed to the delay in the project of the AMC, delays in commissioning, any costs that the ACT may incur as a result of delays and most importantly the impact on sentenced prisoners,” she said.

Simon Corbell as the minister then responsible says he has nothing to fear/

Maybe if we had a decent opposition worth voting for you’d have more case to criticise the long suffering public.

Many organisations wait until things are actually running/in place before they actually open the thing. It often saves embarrassment.
Why bother? It’s not like anyone in Canberra is going to vote for anyone else. They could have held the opening ceremony in an empty field for all the difference it would have made.

If only it was a new hospital – then it’d be straight out of an episode of Yes, Minister.

I think the lesson here is that all journalists (and constituents) should enquire, at every opening ceremony, whether this means the faciliity being opened is actually commencing operations in the forseeable future.

A bit of rigour with our ribbon-cutting, if you will.
