We’re turning the spotlight on social issues this week, with the launch of ACT Mental Health Month on Saturday, and on Wednesday, our very own Group Editor Genevieve Jacobs will facilitate a panel on homelessness and poverty to mark Anti-Poverty Week 2020.
Landcare for the Future is discussing environmental values at Farrer Ridge, and ACT Historic Places is holding a Kids at Historic Places botanical drawing class at Lanyon Homestead on Sunday for Floriade Reimagined.
Our friends at Bayldon Ag are hosting their first Field Day at the Queanbeyan showground with all the fun of the fair for the kids at Bell’s Amusements sideshow, and all the equipment you could ever need in the garden or on the farm on show.
If your kids love to dance, Kulture Break is holding free trial classes all week so they can try break dancing, ballet, contemporary and hip hop dance.

Bayldon Ag is hosting their first ever Field Day at the Queanbeyan Showgrounds.
The event will showcase their complete range of Toro, Polaris, Bushranger, Silvan, Rapid Spray, Kioti and Duetz-Fahr. There will be some fantastic deals available across the whole range, as well as Bell’s Amusements providing rides and food.

contour 556 – Canberra’s Public Art Biennial

For three weeks in October, Canberra’s free public art biennial contour 556 returns to Lake Burley Griffin, featuring national and international artists whose sculptures, performance, sound and digital projections have been selected in response to Australia’s political, cultural and physical history. People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to engage in the puzzling and delightful art in the public space.

Mental Health Month ACT will be launched virtually in 2020 to support the mental well-being of the Canberra community and the impacts the events of this year have had on us all (in a COVID-safe way, of course).
The Mental Health Month Launch event is a live stream video series that explores a diverse selection of community mental health services available in the ACT through conversations on personal experiences and reflections. Check out the other events happening during Mental Health Month.

Get in for a red-hot line up of some of Canberra’s funniest people all in one gig. Hosted by Chris Ryan, the night features Deadly Funny runner-up Benny Eggmolesse, Anthony Tomic, Roland Bull, Polly Hemming and Joey Richards.
For patrons’ safety, attendees will be required to provide their names and phone numbers for contact tracing, and the venue capacity will be strictly limited in line with current health restrictions. Tickets will be sold in sets of four, with each group seated at their own table.

Botanical drawing or ‘Flower painting’ was a popular genteel pastime for people in the Victorian-era. Children will take a tour around the gardens to look at and sketch the wonderful trees and plants they see on watercolour paper and then add colour to their drawings using watercolour pencils.

Join like-minded young people at Farrer Ridge Nature Reserve to learn about the area, the environmental values and how to manage some of the worst weeds in a special part of Canberra. We’ll be weeding, learning from each other and from the local volunteers at Farrer Ridge Parkcare Group.
Bring sun protection and a water bottle, wear sturdy shoes, long pants and long sleeves (old clothes) as we will be working around some thorny weeds.

Kulture Break is a well-being and inclusion facility that focuses on more than just dance and music. They’re hosting a whole week of free trial classes for the Make Your Move dance program held in Gungahlin and Tuggeranong. There are classes available for all skill levels and ages, catering to anyone from the age of three all the way to adults.
The styles of dance you can try out include hip hop, jazz, ballet, contemporary and break dance.

Over the past two months, teams of up-and-coming entrepreneurs from the Australian National University and the broader Canberra region have been working hard, developing innovative business ideas through this year’s virtual InnovationACT cohort.
See how far these teams have come and join us in supporting them. The top 10 teams each deliver a five-minute pitch in front of the judging panel for a chance to take home a share of the $50,000 grant pool and other startup support.
Winners will be announced at InnovationACT 2020: Awards Night showcase on 17 October.
