Two people – believed to have been on a training flight – have died after a helicopter crashed near Goulburn yesterday.
According to NSW Police Detective chief inspector Brendan Bernie, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) received information about a missing aircraft at around 6:45 pm on Wednesday night (2 December).
He said the aircraft had taken off from Goulburn Aerodrome between 3:00 pm and 3:30 pm and was last seen east of Marulan.
Police from the Hume Police Area Command, Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, NSW Police Ambulance Paramedics, Fire and Rescue NSW, Rural Fire Service commenced a search in rugged bushland near Tallong which is approximately 37 kilometres north-west of Goulburn.
“Due to poor weather last night they couldn’t do an air search so police rescue went in on foot,” he said.
The crash site was located at about 12:25 am this morning by NSW Police Rescue personnel and the bodies of two people were located near the wreckage.
They have not been formally identified but are understood to be a 36-year-old instructor from Goulburn and 55-year-old student pilot from Victoria.
Once the recovery is completed, investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), in conjunction the NSW Police Force, will investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Police will prepare a brief for the information of the Coroner.
