Feel like your umbrella and raincoat were dragged out a little more than usual last month? Your suspicions were correct, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) confirming Canberra experienced a wetter-than-average April.

The latest climate summary showed BOM sites across the Capital had around double their average total rainfall for the month.

Canberra Airport recorded 81.4 mm, its wettest April since 2015.

“[The total] is 223 per cent of the average at the current site of 36.5 mm, or 185 per cent of the average over all years of 44.1 mm,” the report said.

The cloudy conditions also impacted the Territory’s temperatures, with the mean minimum temperature nearly 2 degrees above average.

“The temperature at Canberra Airport did not fall below 3 degrees Celsius this year before the end of April, only the third time this has happened after 1989 and 2007,” the report stated.

“The Canberra Airport April mean minimum temperature was 8.5 degrees Celsius, the warmest since 2018 and the eighth-warmest over all years since 1939, despite the current site having substantially lower minimum temperatures than the pre-2010 site.”

The warmest day was 11 April when 24 degrees Celsius was recorded at Canberra Airport, and the same temperature on 5 April at the Tuggeranong (Isabella Plains) site.

The coolest day was 2 April when the temperature reached 13.6 degrees Celsius. The coldest morning was 22 April (3.1 degrees Celsius) and the warmest morning was 10 April when the minimum temperature hit 14.5 degrees Celsius in Tuggeranong.
